Scottish Premiership game postponed due to 'unplayable' conditions with latest on Rangers vs Aberdeen

A number of games in the Scottish football calendar have been postponed due to poor weather conditions.

Freezing weather conditions have resulted in several fixtures across the Scottish football calendar being postponed this evening as the cold snap begins to hit the country.

Alongside a further six games scheduled for Tuesday, Livingston’s clash with St Mirren at the Home of the Set Fare Arena has been called off due to cold conditions in the city, which have “made the pitch unplayable”.

Livingston stated on their official website, which read: “After today’s pitch inspection, tonight’s Scottish Premiership tie with St Mirren has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. Details of the rearranged fixture will be released in due course.” This was followed by a similar statement from their visitors, who noted that: “Freezing conditions have made the pitch unplayable.”

Several games across the UK were postponed last weekend, after stadiums faced frozen pitches and unsafe conditions, and the weather has now claimed further games in Scotland. The Challenge Cup ties between Arbroath and East Fife, Ayr United and Stranraer, Partick Thistle and Inverness, Queen's Park and Forfar Athletic, plus Stirling Albion v Stenhousemuir have also fallen victim to the weather.

St Johnstone’s home tie against Ross County has also been postponed due to an accident on the A9 which has left the County team bus unable to reach to Perth.

Earlier this morning, the Met Office had issued a further warning for snow in large parts of north-east and northern Scotland from 11am until 7pm on Tuesday, with areas covered by the new Met Office amber warning including parts of Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highland, Angus, and Perth and Kinross.

Many areas of Scotland have been battered by snow and ice with temperatures plummeting below 10 °C this week, disrupting public transport. All schools in Aberdeen City Council have confirmed they will be closed on Wednesday, with the council saying the decision has been taken due to the level of snow forecast.

With the weather conditions causing disruption, many on social media have questioned whether Rangers’ clash with Aberdeen this evening would suffer a similar fate, with Dons fans set to travel to the game this evening. However, despite the freezing conditions, tonight’s Scottish Premiership fixture at Ibrox (kick-off: 8pm) is scheduled to go ahead, according to reports.

Alongside the match in Glasgow, the Challenge Cup ties between Airdrieonians and Montrose, and Raith Rovers and Queen of the South, have so far survived with each game scheduled to kick-off at 7.45pm.
