Premier Sports Cup last 16 draw in full: Celtic, Rangers and Hearts discover opponents as local derby unlocked
Here’s the Premier Sports Cup last 16 draw in full with Celtic, Rangers and Hearts amongst those in the mix.
The likes of Celtic, Rangers and Hearts have discovered their Premier Sports Cup last 16 opponents, after the draw was completed on Sunday.
Dundee United await the Hoops at Tannadice while Rangers host holders St Mirren. Hearts take on Inverness CT and a tasty Ayrshire derby between Kilmarnock and Ayr United has been picked out. Ties will be played across the weekend of August 15 and 16 with Premier Sports to shortly make decisions on what games are broadcast on television.
Celtic, Hearts, Rangers, Motherwell and Hibs entered the competition at this stage amid their respective European qualification campaigns this summer. They were joined in the seeded section by Aberdeen, Ayr United and Ross County after the group stage came to a close with Championship side Dunfermline Athletic booking a last 16 slot with a 1-0 win over St Mirren, who were then left unseeded.
How did Premier Sports Cup group stage play out?
Aberdeen were the most high-profile of the Premiership clubs involved in the group stage and had the most comfortable four-game stretch. They won all of their Group A matches to progress and it was a far cry from what others had to endure. Dundee United needed a win by Spartans over Montrose on the final weekend to win their Group B section after losing to the Links Park side earlier this month.
The Buddies scored goals aplenty in Group C but a disappointing loss against the Pars risked a tougher draw in the last 16. It was the same for Dundee, despite amassing 10 points from 12, as League One outfit Ross County managed to edge them out of Group D’s first place on 11. Livingston were relegated from the top flight last season and ended Group E in third, behind fellow Championship sides, Stenhousemuir and Partick Thistle.
St Johnstone will return to the Premiership in a sombre mood after drawing with East Fife, losing the penalty shootout, and going out of Group F. The Bayview side managed to finish runners-up with Inverness CT on top and Falkirk are also out. Ayr United topped Group G after John McGlynn’s men amassed seven points but Kilmarnock got through with nine from Group H.
