Next Hibs manager update as key to boss hunt outlined ahead of warm weather training

Hibs had their first Premiership game since the sacking of David Gray against Aberdeen on Saturday.

John Potter says Hibs getting their head coach appointment right rather than rushing is key ahead of a warm weather training camp.

The Easter Road side played out a 1-1 draw with Aberdeen in the Premiership, their first match since David Gray was sacked midweek, following defeat to Kilmarnock. Former striker Kevin Nisbet put Stephen Robinson’s visitors ahead before Martin Boyle levelled from the spot. Hibs enter the three-week international break 10th but interim head coach Potter insists getting the right figure is of paramount importance.

Asked if he thought Hibs chiefs would want their man in place for their Spanish training camp, Potter said: “I'm sure ideally they would love to, but the most important thing is they get the right person for that job. For me, that's more important than anything else, but honestly, it's not my decision. I just think that getting the right person is the most important thing.”

Hibs next manager update

He added: “Yes, the players are off for quite a few days. Obviously, there are international ones away, so I just had a little chat with them all there. For myself, I'm sure I'll find out in the next couple of days what the club want to do going forward.

“We've put a plan in place for when we go away to La Manga next Saturday for a small training camp. That's helping organise, whoever's in charge. If a new manager's in or a new head coach is in or a coaching team, they'll obviously take that, but there's plans in place for that if not. So, that's not really my decision, but we are organised if we need to be there.”

Pittodrie boss Robinson hailed ‘a great week’ for his side after their point gained from a third road match this week. They progressed to the Premier Sport Cup semi-finals on penalties at Kilmarnock a week ago at Kilmarnock before trouncing Motherwell 4-0 in ML1. Robinson was still satisfied after seeing his team negotiate a demanding travel schedule.

Hibs penalty vs Aberdeen verdict

He said: “It’s been a great week. I think the fixture list was very, very unkind to us with the travelling, the turnaround and we’ve managed to finish this mini-block of games two points off fourth and with a semi-final. So it’s credit to the players and the staff. “I think they’ve worked tirelessly to implement what we’re trying to do. And probably a point was deserved by both teams today. First and foremost the boys need a break, that’s been six games in 18 days.”

Robinson admits referee Nick Walsh was left with no option but to award a penalty after Aberdeen defender Jack Milne dragged Jason Kerr to the ground. He added on the decision and goalscorer Nisbet: “It was a penalty. And I feel if you defend that deep you’re going to make a mistake and get punished at some stage of the game. Kevin has 12 goals, he was excellent. A real captain's performance, his work ethic and his hold up play, as well as his goal. He's been superb for me since I came to the club. He's been excellent for me, and I'm very, very proud to have him as our captain.”
