Scotland call up Euro 2024 striker replacement as squad hit by shock Ben Doak withdrawal
Steve Clarke decision revealed as Euros dream ends for Liverpool winger
Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has drafted Bristol City striker Tommy Conway into his Euro 2024 squad amid the shock news that Ben Doak has joined Lyndon Dykes in withdrawing from the tournament due to injury.
Conway, who scored for the Under-21s in their 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey on Monday, has been handed a first senior call-up ahead of Friday’s final warm-up match against Finland at Hampden after an impressive season for the English Championship side. The 21-year-old scored 12 goals in 43 appearances for the Robins across the 2023-24 campaign, including the winner against West Ham in the FA Cup, and has netted twice in six caps for Scot Gemmill's Under-21s.
Confirmation of Conway's selection was tempered with the news that Liverpool winger Doak has failed to overcome a knee injury which has ruled him out since December. The 18-year-old was handed a wildcard call-up despite missing the second half of the season as he recuperated from surgery. He had returned to first team training at Anfield prior to being named in the Euros squad and was in line to become the youngest player to represent Scotland at a major finals.

Clarke revealed after the 2-0 victory over Gibraltar on Monday that he had been considering Conway as a potential replacement for Dykes, who suffered an ankle injury in training last week which has ruled him out of the tournament in Germany. After hearing of his headed goal for the Under-21s in Turkey, Clarke said: “It was nice that Tommy scored. He is a good boy, Tommy, and he is certainly in my mind. I’ve still got to sit down with John (Carver), James (Morrison) and Austin (MacPhee) and Chris Woods and just have a little chat through and try to come up with something that will help us now going into this tournament.”
Dykes and Doak were included in an initial 28-man squad that will be reduced to 26 before Scotland head to their training camp in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Scotland kick off the competition against hosts Germany at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Friday, June 14 before facing Switzerland in Cologne on Wednesday, June 19 and Hungary in Stuttgart on Sunday, June 23 in their bid to reach the knock-out stages.
