On April 7, 1993, it was a winner takes all group stage match in Marseille – but it ended 1-1.
Franck Sauzee, later to play and manage at Hibs, scored the home side’s opener in the Stade Velodrome on but Ian Durrant’s drive levelled the scores and sent the group stage to a last day showdown when Walter Smith’s Rangers faced CSKA Moscow at Ibrox, and the French champions took on Club Bruges.
More than 40,000 took in the make or break game described as 'absolute bedlam in the Velodrome’ by Scottish Television’s commentator Gerry McNee on the night 28 years ago but Walter Smith’s team fell just short of a place in the final against AC Milan.
Here’s a look back at the Rangers team who took on the French champions, and eventual winners of the competition that night – and where they are now.

9. Ally McCoist
Shackled by Basile Boli and Marcel Desailly, McCoist drew a blank on the south cost of France. After a record-breaking goalscoring spell at Rangers he ended his career at Kilmarnock before a much-vaunted media career. Returned to football as Walter Smith's assistant at Scotland then Rangers and assumed the Ibrox hotseat in 2011, winning the Second and Third Division titles. 10. Ian Durrant
Goalscorer hammered into the side-netting from a corner after 52 minutes, but Rangers held on for the point rater than chasing the win. Another who moved to Kilmarnock, and achieved subsequent Scotland caps. Durrant was a coach at Rangers and more recently Dumbarton. Now assistant manager at East Kilbride FC. 11. Pieter Huistra
Winger scored a key goal against Club Brugge, but left 18months later to join Hiroshima in the Japanese J-League. Moved into management assisting the Dutch national team and Ajax before becoming a manager in his own right at Ajax' B-team, Groningen and Indonesia amongst others. Also came close to returning to Scottish football with Falkirk's vacant manager's role in 2013. Photo: SNS Group

12. BOSS - Walter Smith
Legendary manager took Rangers to the cusp of the European Cup Final, but it wasn't to be. Completed nine-in-a-row before moving to Everton in 1998. Took Scotland job after Berti Vogts' tenure then was lured back to Ibrox where he led Rangers to the UEFA Cup final and yet more domestic success before handing the reins to McCoist.
