Events elsewhere overshadowed the start of the game with both sides standing an refusing to ‘take the knee’ in the now customary anti-racism gesture.
When matters turned to football a smouldering start lit up after 23 minutes when Moi Elyounoussi gave the home side the lead – only to see the effort cancelled out by Alfredo Morelos’ 55th goal for Rangers and first in an Old Firm encounter.
Ryan Kent and Elyounoussi again were denied by great saves from Scott Bain and Allan McGregor as the tempo increased with half-time approaching.
The second half was more of the same in the spring sunshine on Glasgow’s East End and though Steven Gerrard rang the changes the sides couldn't be separated and neither goalkeeper was truly worked in the second period.
Gerrard has never experienced a level Old Firm ending before but here is how his Rangers players rated in the first derby-day draw for the manager.

9. Alfredo Morelos - 8
Link-up play was spot on and finally got his Old Firm goal by nodding in at the back-post to equalise and tee up his 55th league goal in Rangers' season of 55th title. Photo: Ian MacNicol

10. Joe Aribo - 6
Performed his role in Rangers' midfield tactics but lacking influence or even usual hold-up play. Kept going until the end but midweek exertions looked to have taken a toll. Photo: SNS Group

11. Ryan Kent - 7
Pressed high and didn't give home side peace and only denied another Old Firm goal by a good first half stop by Scott Bain. Photo: Rob Casey - SNS Group

12. Manager - Steven Gerrard
Limited in his options to start, will be satisfied to remain unbeaten and with application of players and tactics with the league title already sewn up. Photo: Alan Harvey - SNS Group
