Rangers and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard pay tribute to Gerard Houllier
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, who has died aged 73.
Anfield legend Gerrard began his senior career as a substitute for Houllier’s Reds in a match against Blackburn in November 1998.

Writing on Instagram today, Gerrard said: “Devastated to hear the news my former manager Gerard Houllier has passed away. I will never forget what this man did for me and my career. Rest in peace Boss.”
Gerrard played 250 times under the Frenchman, who also signed Ibrox assistant manager Gary McAllister. Together, they won the 2001 UEFA Cup. Later McAllister became Houllier’s assistant at Aston Villa.

Rangers also released a website statement on the Frenchman’s death, saying: “Everyone at Rangers Football Club would like to pass on our heartfelt condolences to the Houllier family and the wider football community at this difficult time. This is a sad day for football as we acknowledge the immense contribution that Gérard made to the sport we all hold dear.”
