Russell Martin says sacking him won't be quick fix as Rangers flop faces furious fans amid Leicester debacle

Foxes languishing in League One after latest loss

Former Rangers boss Russell Martin remains under enormous pressure at his current club Leicester City as fans called for him to be sacked during the 3-1 home defeat by Peterborough United.

Martin, who was axed by Rangers last October after a dreadful start to life at Ibrox, believes that Leicester pulling the trigger on him will not bring a quick fix despite some fans leaving at half-time during the Foxes’ latest loss.

It was a dismal afternoon for Leicester at the King Power Stadium at after strikes from Owura Edward and Harry Leonard and Warren O’Hora’s own goal gave Posh a 3-0 half-time lead in Robbie Savage’s first league game in charge.

Emil Riis pulled one back after the break as the hosts racked up 24 attempts, but a lack of cutting edge up front, and soft mistakes at the back, consigned Leicester to a third league home defeat from four this season.

“I can’t criticise them because they’ve seen another defeat and the goals we conceded,” said Martin. “I’m as frustrated as any of them, but if you think changing a manager is a quick fix then I’m not sure that’s ever the way. We have to keep working. It’s as simple as that. It’s our job to turn the fans’ energy ultimately.”

The defeat left Leicester 17th, just a point above the relegation zone. Martin added: “We’re in their box way more than they’re in ours. I think we create a lot more than they do, but they’re really clinical, and defend the box with everything they have, and we don’t.

“We’re not clinical, and we give up goals that are unacceptable at any level. You have to suffer in a game of football and right now, when we have to suffer, we don’t look like a team. We look like a group of individuals trying to do their own job, and you can’t deal with big moments like that.”

Martin took over Leicester this summer, ending a nine-month hiatus from football management following his departure from Rangers.

The former Premier League champions were widely tipped to be one of the favourites for promotion, but their poor start to the season is threatening to derail their chances.
