Rangers close in on double transfer swoop but face issues back at Ibrox
Left-back and midfielder high on agenda in Govan
Rangers hope to conclude the double signing of left-back Tuur Rommens and central midfielder Tochi Chukwuani by the end of the week.
The Ibrox club is understood to have agreed a £3 million fee with Belgian side Westerlo for Rommens, while Chukwuani is set to cost in the region of £4m from Austrian outfit Sturm Graz.
Rangers head coach Danny Rohl is keen to have both players in his squad for Sunday’s Premiership trip to Aberdeen - particularly after it emerged that defender Dujon Sterling and midfielder Connor Barron could face spells on the sidelines.

Sterling and Barron picked up injuries in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Aberdeen at Ibrox, a result that moved Rangers into second place in the Premiership and to within three points of leaders Hearts. Sterling has hurt his hamstring, while there are concerns Barron - one of the team’s best players in recent weeks - has picked up a knee problem.
Rangers had identified left-back and central midfield as areas in need of replenishment well before the injuries surfaced but Barron’s potential unavailability in particular has accelerated the need for fresh faces. Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and his fellow investors are prepared to back Rohl in the transfer market after the German coach revived Rangers’ title hopes.
Rommens, 22, is a Belgium Under-21 internationalist who started his career at Genk before moving to Westerlo two years ago. Rangers were also interested in AEK Athens’ former Hearts left-back James Penrice, but have now settled on Rommens.
Chukwuani, 22, helped Sturm Graz win the Austrian Bundesliga last term after joining from Lyngby. The Denmark Under-21 internationalist started his career at Nordsjaelland and has played against both Rangers and Celtic in the Europa League, picking up a red card against the latter for a tackle on Callum McGregor.
Rangers are also expected to offload players during this transfer window. The Ibrox side would listen to offers for midfielder Joe Rothwell, who has struggled since signing last summer, while it has been reported that the likes of defender Clinton Nsiala, midfielders Kieran Dowell and Lyall Cameron plus striker Danilo could be deemed surplus to requirements.
