Rangers agree transfer deal for star 'every manager wants in his team' as contract details emerge

Rangers have confirmed the signing of Hearts midfielder Cammy Devlin.

Rangers have announced the signing of Australian international midfielder Cammy Devlin on a free transfer following confirmation of his departure from Hearts on Friday.

Devlin, 28, has penned a two-year contract at Ibrox, with the option of a further year, and becomes the club’s sixth arrival of the summer transfer window, following the capture of former Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Dan Neil, Ben Godfrey and Ivor Pandur.

A key figure in Derek McInnes’ Hearts side that finished second and took the Scottish Premiership title race to the final day last season, Devlin had been with the Tynecastle outfit for five seasons and had been offered improved terms to extend his stay with the club.

Having been named in the Australia squad for this summer’s World Cup, he was given extra time to weigh up his future with away on international duty, however, a club statement confirmed he had missed the deadline set by the club to give a definite answer over his decision.

Linked to clubs in the MLS, Turkish Super Lig and English Championship in recent months, Devlin has instead opted to remain in the Scottish Premiership, completing a free transfer to title rivals Rangers, where he will link up with former head coach McInnes and captain Shankland following their moves to Glasgow earlier this summer.

Following confirmation of the move, Devlin said: “It feels amazing. I am obviously so happy to get it over the line; with the gaffer coming here and a lot of change happening at the club, it feels like a great time to be coming here. It is just an absolute honour and privilege; I am so aware, being in Scotland for a while now, the size of the club and everything that comes with playing at such a massive football club. To call myself a Rangers player now feels pretty special and I just cannot wait to get started.”

Head coach McInnes added: “Cammy is obviously a player I know, and I am well aware what he will offer to Rangers. His levels of consistency for me were superb, and he is the type of player that every manager wants in his team. He is someone who knows the Scottish league, and nothing will surprise him with what lies ahead. I am looking forward to welcoming Cammy to Rangers and working with him again after he returns from his holiday.”
