'Job under threat' - Former players tear into Rangers and Derek McInnes after dismal European exit

Rangers branded a ‘pub team’ as manager’s tactics questioned after Conference League play-off defeat

Former players have torn into Rangers and questioned Derek McInnes after an ignominios European exit at the hands of Jablonec in the Conference League play-off.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg at Ibrox last week, Rangers turned in a turgid performance in the Czech Republic which lacked creativity and invention, and it proved costly.

Jablonec midfielder Vakhtang Tchanturishvili deservedly levelled the tie in the 73rd minute with a drive which took the game to 1-1 on aggregate and eventually into extra-time and penalties.

Gers keeper Ivor Pandur saved from Filip Zorvan, but Findlay Curtis fired his spot-kick over the bar and James Penrice was thwarted by Jablonec keeper Jan Hanus, leaving Jan Chramosta to fire in the decisive kick.

The defeat is a huge blow to the Govan side, who were knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers by Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok and whose massive rebuild under McInnes is struggling to get off the ground.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd did not mince his words as he gave his verdict on Sky Sports.

"They look like an absolute pub team," he said. "They've been terrible, devoid of any ideas. No creativity, they've just been going long hoping something is going to happen. And this was coming. They are absolutely miles off it. And Derek McInnes, you've got to say, his job will will be under threat after this."

Another ex-Rangers man, former midfielder Andy Halliday, felt the performance was among Rangers' worst ever in Europe and also had a word of warning for McInnes as he provided his post-match thoughts on BBC Sportsound.

"I think of Kaunus, Progres Niederkorn and tonight. That's up there with all of them," he said. "Jablonec for me aren't a good side, but they were the better side tonight. Rangers, no style, no movement, no desire, no tackles, no shots, no control - offered absolutely nothing over the 120 minutes.

"The surprising fact is, I'm not that shocked given what I've watched over the first five or six games of the season. There's been a lot of questions about the recruitment, and rightly so. There's been a lot of questions towards the players, and rightly so. But the questions are going to start coming Derek McInnes' way."

Questioning the manager's tactics, Halliday added: "Rangers played five different formations tonight and and multiple changes of personnel to try and find a way back into the game but they offered nothing. Rangers never had a game at the weekend. They had a week to prepare for this game. I don't know how they prepared, or what they prepared.

"I don't know how Rangers are going to score a goal. Any time people are on the ball there's a lack of options. Off the ball they are obsessed with man for man but they get played through far too easily. In the final third they are devoid of ideas to create chances. This for me is one of the worst performances and results in Rangers' recent history. In terms of level of performance, I don't see how it's getting better."
