How Rangers responded to Luke McCowan's Celtic 'no team touches us' claim

Manager plays it cool after midfielder’s comments in wake of Stuttgart win

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl refused to be drawn on Luke McCowan’s comments that no team in Scotland can live with Celtic when they are at their best - but he pointed out that the defending champions remain behind their rivals ahead of this weekend’s Premiership clash.

Rangers are second in the league on 56 points, two clear of Celtic - who have a game in hand - and four behind leaders Hearts. The Glasgow duo meet at Ibrox on Sunday, with Celtic travelling across the city with a little more confidence after winning 1-0 away at VfB Stuttgart on Thursday night.

After the game at the MHP Arena, Celtic matchwinner McCowan contested that “we know if we’re at it, no team in that league [the Premiership] touches us”. Those comments were put to Rohl during his pre-match press conference and the German issued a reminder of where Celtic are in the standings.

“I think at the moment we are in the second position, they are behind us,” said Rohl. “I think they have at the moment, seven or eight defeats. Yeah, I think in general it makes no sense to speak too much about the other side; we have to focus on ourselves.

“We want to win this game. I see my team is ready to take points, and then we'll see on Sunday, hopefully both teams try everything and I'm confident that we have a big chance of winning this game.”

Some pundits are claiming that the loser of this match between Rangers and Celtic will be out of the title race, but Rohl does not agree with that assessment.

“It's a crucial game, but no team will be out after this game because there are still 27 points you can take and in football, that’s massive,” added Rohl. “It's two matchdays and you are in the title race again.

“I think this is also important, but of course, we know for all the teams now every matchday is important, not just for us but also for the other three teams around us. Everyone fights for points, and you have to take points as soon as possible to be really close in this race.”
