Danny Rohl exits Rangers along with two others and breaks silence on Red Bull Salzburg move

Rangers confirm departure of German head coach to Austrian side

Rangers have taken a step closer to appointing Derek McInnes as their new manager after confirming the departure of Danny Rohl to Red Bull Salzburg.

Rohl leaves Ibrox after only eight months in charge, joining the Austrian Bundesliga side on a three-year contract, with Rangers receiving a seven-figure compensation payment for the 37-year-old, who had been under contract until 2028.

The German will be replaced in the Rangers dugout by McInnes, who has agreed a move from Hearts after guiding the Tynecastle club to a runners-up finish in the Scottish Premiership last season, narrowly missing out on a historic title in a final day defeat by eventual champions Celtic.

Also confirmed as leaving Rangers are first-team performance manager, Sascha Lense, and first-team analyst, Tristan Steiner.

Rangers chairman, Andrew Cavenagh, commented: “I’d like to thank Danny for his service and commitment to Rangers. He and his staff put in a significant amount of hard work during his time in charge, which we are greatly appreciative of. We wish them the best of luck moving forward.”

Rangers promised fans a further update on the vacant position "in due course" with McInnes primed to join on a three-year contract and Hearts set receive a compensation payment of around £700,000.

Rohl rejoins the Red Bull network having began his professional coaching career in Germany with RB Leipzig. There was no buyout clause in his Rangers contract but once he showed interest in speaking to Salzburg, a mutual agreement was reached to part ways.

"I'm incredibly excited about my new role at FC Red Bull Salzburg," Rohl stated. "I'm already familiar with the club from my previous coaching experience and know what opportunities exist here, the quality within the club, and the ambitious aims they pursue.

"That's precisely what attracted me. Salzburg stands for courageous, intense, and attacking football – a style of football I strongly identify with and which also aligns with my own vision of the game. Together, we want to develop a team that plays with energy, determination and with a clear style of play.

"Our aim has to be to bring titles back to Salzburg and to represent the club successfully on the European stage. We will work hard every day to achieve this. The immediate priority is to get to know the players and everyone involved quickly, build close relationships, and prepare the team as best as possible for the challenges ahead. We have some exciting tasks ahead of us, and I look forward to embarking on this journey together."

Marcus Mann, managing director of sport at RB Salzburg, added: "Our stated aim was to have our new head coach in place by the start of pre-season training. We've achieved this by recruiting Danny Röhl, our preferred candidate. Throughout his career, Danny has amassed a wealth of experience at a high level with some of the most prominent teams in European professional football. We are convinced that his playing philosophy and his approach to developing players are a perfect fit for the style we want to play at FC Red Bull Salzburg. We're now delighted to be able to get right into things straight away."
