Danny Rohl addresses Rangers future as he responds to reports linking him with Bundesliga move

The German boss has responded to reports linking him with big-spending Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg

Danny Rohl has broken his silence on reports linking him with a move to German Bundesliga strugglers VfL Wolfsburg - insisting his full focus is on Rangers.

Wolfsburg have reportedly placed the 37-year-old on a shortlist to replace veteran manager Dieter Hecking, who is poised to move into a new director of football role at the end of the season.

Rohl has spoken previously about his ambition to work in the top-flight in his homeland and already has a strong connection in place with Wolfsburg sporting director Pirmin Schwegler, having worked together at Bayern Munich between 2020 and 2021.

The German side have been long-term admirers of the former Sheffield Wednesday boss after previously targeting him last summer before a proposed move fell through whilst he was still at Hillsborough.

Wolfsburg instead appointed Paul Simonis, who lasted only five months in the role. Now they are in a position to stump up £1m in compensation to lure Rohl away from Ibrox, having come under pressure following the collapse of Rangers’ Premiership title charge in recent games.

Grilled on those job links ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm clash against Celtic, Rohl responded: “There's a lot of rumours. I think I looked back last year with how many clubs I was linked. I could get maybe 20 jobs there in the newspaper.

“My full focus is on Rangers. I think even in the last couple of days, our conversations with the board, with the club, goes just in one direction. How can we win titles with the club in the future? We have to change.”

Pressed further on his future and whether he feels certain he will still be Rangers manager at the start of next season, Rohl commented: “From my side of course, 100 per cent. I'm convinced I chose the club with the reason to bring back success, to win titles, I think this is also part of our club.

“A good process is not enough. A good process for us is not what we want. We want to have titles and for this we have to change things. Like I said, we set standards, but the standards we have to increase. And if we do this, then we have a chance.”

Danny Rohl breaks silence on board talks after Hearts loss

In the wake of Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Premiership table-toppers Hearts at Tynecastle on Monday night, Rohl held conversations with members of the Ibrox hierarchy to discuss how the club move forward after their title dream all but ended in the capital. He is adamant he retain the full support of the board.

Asked to provide an insight into those discussions and Rangers transfer strategy, Rohl stated: “Fully, fully committed. I feel it every day, the support. I feel the conversations we had. We spoke so much about what we want to change for the summer.

“All in all, I feel that I'm in the right place with the right people with a lot of motivation, positive energy to bring this club not just to a one-hit wonder, back to a consistent club who can win titles in a row. I think this is also important to understand.

“A one-hit wonder for us, it's nice, but what we are looking for is that you consistently play for the title again and again. And this is my job, this is our job, and this is why I'm looking forward.”
