Danny Rohl addresses Rangers fan anger, transfer window and current players
Ibrox boss has his say after defeat by Roma
After seeing his Rangers side lose for the seventh successive time in Europe, a new low for the Ibrox club, manager Danny Rohl has stressed he is focusing on winning a third league game in a row against Dundee this weekend.
The German knows it can only be about small steps at a time of deep unrest. The 2-0 loss to AS Roma, which has created a new unwanted record for the Ibrox club, was set against a backdrop of more loud protesting against Kevin Thelwell, the club’s sporting director, and Patrick Stewart, the chief executive.
Both saw their images superimposed on sniper targets on banners in the ground that were eventually removed by stewards.
With AS Roma having taken a two-goal in the first half, the fans had plenty of time to turn their attention to the club’s hierarchy. Chairman Andrew Cavenagh also present again as he continues to work out what to do about the level of acrimony that has not been assuaged by unpopular manager Russell Martin’s departure.

Rohl was asked after the game if he believes the job is bigger than he had first thought. He withdrew from the running to take over at one point before returning to the frame.
“No, no,” the German said. “Of course not. I think that when I arrived and looked at the schedule, you could see there were big games ahead. For me, and it was a big message after this game today, the focus is on Sunday (v Dundee at Dens Park). Take three wins in a row in the league (into the international window) ….
"Of course, in the future we want to win such big games as this one, but at the moment we see where we are and we know where we want to go.”
He is confident Rangers can get there, eventually. The manager stressed his determination to reduce the anger evident in the stands.
“I am totally convinced we can change the mood in the next weeks and months,” he said. “I am fully convinced we can go in that direction. I see at the moment a team willing to turn things around, especially after the start of the season. They had not so much confidence. You see that in big games at the moment. This is my job. I said to the players that I am totally convinced we can go in the right direction. We need to work hard and we need on Sunday a strong performance again. We cannot do one step less because we need results in this league as well.”
Rohl pinpointed the improvement in on-loan Spurs winger Mikey Moore as being proof of the impact he can have on players. He is sure others can step up a few more levels. Moore was applauded off by the crowd when he was replaced with nine minutes left after an energetic display.
The 18-year-old is looking like he will be an asset after a slow start. Rohl stressed that it not simply a matter of waiting until the transfer window opens. He must breathe confidence into the players already at the club.
“It feels like the first three weeks have helped massively for me to see (everyone),” he said. “You see how Mikey has improved in the last two weeks, it makes me very positive that I can improve many more players in the next couple of weeks. At the moment we do not have much training, That is of course a part of the process where we are.
"I believe there is much, much more in this team. I believe 100 per cent there is so much more in this team. We had some players that have stepped up in the last few weeks. I see the development in the last two weeks and from this point we will stick together and of course we need to prepare (for the transfer window). But at the moment I need to prepare my players who are here.”
