Ally McCoist identifies 'great signing for Rangers' but warns of current star they 'don't want to lose'

Rangers legend reckons out-of-favour EPL forward would be a hit at Ibrox

Ally McCoist believes a move for out-of-favour Leeds United striker Joel Piroe would represent excellent transfer business for Rangers this summer.

Piroe has been consistently linked with a move to Ibrox since the 49ers takeover last summer and Rangers legend McCoist is convinced that the Dutchman would be an asset for Danny Rohl's side.

The 26-year-old was a star of Leeds' promotion-winning campaign in 2024-25, scoring 19 goals and providing seven assists in the Championship, but has fallen down the pecking order in the Premier League.

Piroe has started just five matches this season with his only goal coming in an FA Cup victory over Norwich City but McCoist reckons the Suriname international would be a hit at Ibrox.

"Joel Piroe would be a great signing for Rangers," McCoist said in an interview with talkSPORT Bet Casino. "He probably hasn't done as well as you'd have hoped in the Premier League, but I've seen enough of him. As a Rangers supporter, I wouldn't mind that at all. I think he could certainly do a job up here. I think he'd adapt to this football as well."

One player who could be heading out of Ibrox this summer is Nico Raskin with clubs in England and across Europe taking note of his emerging status as a regular in the Belgian national team.

McCoist believes Rangers should do everything in their power to keep the 25-year-old, who has two years left on his contract, but admits a move to Leeds could be tempting amid rumoured interest from Elland Road.

"Rangers don’t want to be losing Nicolas Raskin," he said. "He's the one I think. I know he's been out the last couple of games, but the sooner we get him back as well the better.

"He's just come to the club so I wouldn't think he'd be wanting to leave immediately, but he looks as though he's capable of going to any level to be fair. If you're asking me, Raskin would be the one that I'd be concerned about losing.

"Leeds United? A massive, massive club. Goes without saying. That would surely interest most players."
