Rangers v Celtic referee and VAR for Premier Sports Cup clash at Ibrox confirmed

SFA appoint match officials for first Old Firm derby of season

Rangers and Celtic have discovered who will referee the first Old Firm clash of the season at Ibrox.

The rivals meet in Govan in a Premier Sports Cup quarter-final on Sunday - just seven days before locking heads again in the Scottish Premiership at Celtic Park.

There will be no away fans in attendance at either match - or any Glasgow derby this season - after a “temporary arrangement” was reached following talks between the clubs and the SPFL last week following supporter disorder during last term's Scottish Cup quarter-final at Ibrox.

Rangers initially offered Celtic 300 away tickets for the match, which the Parkhead club rejected.

The Scottish Football Association has appointed Nick Walsh as referee for this weekend’s game. The experienced whistler will be supported by assistant referees Frank Connor and Daniel McFarlane, with Kevin Clancy as fourth official.

Walsh, 35, is the only current Scottish referee who holds elite UEFA status. He took charge of two Old Firm fixtures last season, namely the Premier Sports Cup semi-final at Hampden and the post-split league match at Celtic Park in May. Celtic won both matches 3-1.

Walsh brandished 17 yellow cards across the two games and one red card, which was shown to Rangers midfielder Thelo Aasgaard for a high challenge on Anthony Ralston during the cup clash at the national stadium.

Sunday’s Video Assistant Referee is Andrew Dallas, who will be assisted by Steven McLean.
