16-year-old Rangers talent called upon by Scotland U21s as World Cup squad member and uncapped stars selected

Scotland U21s will be in action over the international break with a new look.

Tony Docherty has named several uncapped players in his first Scotland U21s squad.

The former Dundee manager has taken over from Scot Gemmill as head coach ahead of UEFA Euro U21s qualifiers versus Azerbaijan and Bulgaria over the international break. 16-year-old attacker Kyle Glasgow is currently on loan at Alloa Athletic from Rangers, and makes the jump after caps at U17s level, amid excellent form at League One level.

Bobby Wales, on loan at Dundee from Swansea, St Mirren’s Henry Fieldson and Louis Jackson, Manchester United’s Daniel Armer, and Northampton Town pair Josh Feeney and Sam Chambers are also picked. The Cobblers duo are on loan from Aston Villa and Leeds United.

Who has been called up by Scotland U21s?

Tyler Fletcher was in Scotland’s World Cup squad in the summer but now drops back into the youth fold after returning to academy football with Manchester United. The senior national team have hired Belgian boss Sebastien Pocognoli as head coach and Docherty says mirroring his style will be on the agenda to aid transitioning from youth level.

"I'll mirror image what the style of play, what the philosophy is," Docherty explained. "We can enhance Sebastien's squad with the development of young players, identifying the best ones, improving them and developing them but as we do that, we need to create, in my opinion, that winning team mentality. We'll be all out to play an attacking style of football, which is attractive to watch and pleasing on the eye."

"We need to work harder to make sure that there's more opportunities for U21s players to get the benefit of playing first-team football. Are they getting enough minutes? Are they performing well? And, if they are, then they should come into a national squad.

"There's now seven eligible U21s players in the A squad, which I think's fantastic. This is a really strong squad I've got. There is a chance, a slim chance of qualification. You're all out to try win the two matches. It also impinges on pot three and pot four for your next campaign that you would be starting if you weren't successful in qualifying."
