Motherwell in 'very open' contract discussions with out of contract star as impressive ace faces key decision

The former Southampton midfielder could leave Motherwell this summer at the end of his contract.

Motherwell have held “honest” contract conversations with Callum Slattery, according to boss Jens Berthel Askou, as the midfielder’s deal at Fir Park approaches its conclusion.

The Southampton youth academy graduate returned from a two-game suspension for simulation against St Mirren in February during the Steelmen’s dramatic 3-2 win over Rangers last Sunday. Slattery has proven key to Askou’s possession-heavy style that has put Motherwell six points clear in fourth, the final European qualifier spot, with four games to go.

He is out of contract at the club he joined from Saints in 2021 and uncertainty surrounds whether or not he will be wearing claret and amber next season. Askou knows it’s a big decision and that’s why there will be no rush to an outcome. Motherwell face Falkirk this Saturday.

Will Callum Slattery sign a new Motherwell contract?

"There's no conclusion on it,” said Askou when asked about the midfielder’s contract situation. “We're in a good dialogue about his future. Obviously, we're very positive about what he has done for this club. He's one of our longest serving players in the squad. Has meant a lot to this football club. Motherwell has meant a lot to him.

“Still does. Obviously, now he's at a time in his career where the decision that has to be made for him is also quite important and a big one. Having been here for a while and having performed really well this season, whether to try and capitalise on that, or whether to continue this journey. That's why we're not rushing into that decision. We're still keeping our discussion very open and honest and we'll see where that lands."

Slattery played his part in Motherwell achieving a third league win at Ibrox since he arrived at Fir Park as European football nears. Victory over Falkirk and defeat for fifth-placed Hibs against Celtic a day later could put Motherwell, with a superior goal difference, nine points clear in fourth with three games to go. Slattery is expected to be a difference maker between now and the end of this season.

"He was hungry to come in and make a difference because he's been annoyed as hell that he hasn't been able to play,” Askou added. “Now he can be just as important as he wants to be. If he decides he wants to be extremely important, as he has been for this club for many years now, then I'm sure he will be. He looks so hungry and has all the quality he needs to come in and decide any game at this level.”
