Scotland have never beaten Morocco in a competitive game, or an international friendly, as the sides have only played each other once. Friday night’s game in Group C will be just the second time the two sides have faced each other in their history.

Scotland vs Morocco - head to head record

As attested to above, the two nation’s have only faced each other, with the first and only time coming at the 1998 World Cup in France, where Scotland lost their final Group A fixture 3-0 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in St Etienne.

Needing to win to quality for the last 16 of the tournament, Scotland went one behind after 23 minutes when Salaheddine Bassir fired the Moroccan’s into an early lead, before Abdeljalil Hadda doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time. Craig Burley was then sent off in the 56th minute of the game for a cynical tackle goal-scorer Bassir. The Deportivo La Coruna striker then bagged his second in the 86th minute to condemn Craig Brown’s side to another group stage exit. Morocco’s 3-0 win against Scotland remains their largest margin of victory in any World Cup game.

After the game, Scotland boss Brown admitted. "I'm afraid you can't give away goals at this level like we did and hope to survive and we conceded two very bad goals. Thereafter it was an uphill climb. We fought bravely but we weren't good enough at that stage. I think the result certainly flattered Morocco but we were the losing side and I think Morocco deserved to win."

Scotland starting XI that night: Jim Leighton, Jackie McNamara, Colin Hendry, David Weir, Tommy Boyd; Craig Burley, Paul Lambert, John Collins, Christian Dailly; Gordon Durie, Kevin Gallacher.

Scotland 17/4, Morocco 7/10, draw 12/5- via SkyBet
