Scotland can take a huge step towards qualifying for a first World Cup in 28 years with a positive result in Greece on Saturday night.
Steve Clarke’s men travel to the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis in Piraeus needing to avoid defeat to retain hopes of securing an automatic spot at next year’s tournament in USA, Mexico and Canada.
Only the winners of Group C will qualify directly for the 2026 finals, with the runners-up progressing to the World Cup play-offs held in March. Scotland currently sit second on 10 points, behind leaders Denmark on goal difference, with two qualifiers remaining.
With the Danes fully expected to defeat Belarus at home in their own penultimate fixture on Saturday, Scotland know they must claim at least a point in Greece to take the race for top spot into a final winner-takes-all showdown against Denmark at Hampden on Tuesday.
Defeat would almost certainly condemn Scotland to the play-offs due to an unassailable goal difference deficit to Denmark - assuming there is no shock result in Copenhagen.
The match will be the fourth time Greece and Scotland have met in the calendar year. A 1-0 win for Scotland in the Nations League play-off first leg on March 20 was followed by a 3-0 home defeat which relegated Steve Clarke’s men to League B.
Scotland made amends by coming from behind to beat Greece 3-1 at Hampden last month in their World Cup qualifier, with the Greeks subsequently eliminated from qualifying when losing to 3-1 in Denmark three days later.
