Steve Clarke resigns as Scotland head coach after World Cup elimination

Clarke steps down in shock end to successful seven-year Scotland tenure

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has resigned following the team’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup.

The shock news was announced by the Scottish Football Association shortly after Croatia’s 2-1 victory over Ghana condemned Scotland to a disappointing group stage exit.

Clarke signed a new four-year deal prior to the World Cup and was expected to lead the country into Euro 2028 - which Scotland will co-host - and the 2030 World Cup.

However, he has now stepped down after seven years in charge, bringing an end to the most successful tenure of any Scotland manager that saw him qualify for three major tournaments following a 22-year absence.

In an open letter to supporters, Clarke stated: “In time I will be able to reflect on a tumultous seven years but one element that has given me the greatest satisfaction is witnessing the reconnection of our national team and our fans.

“The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now,” he said. They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their Gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”

Scotland mustered three points from nine in World Cup Group C to end up behind Brazil and Morocco with a minus three goal difference but it was not enough to secure a place among the eight best third-placed teams who move through to the last-32 of the competition.

Like Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, failure to negotiate the group stage has elicited stinging criticism from frustrated supporters who have watched just four goals in nine games in those finals, with the concession of 16.

Ian Maxwell, Scottish FA Chief Executive added: “While we are all disappointed to have exited the World Cup at the group stage, we must not lose sight of the undeniable progress made during Steve’s seven years in charge.

“From starting as a pot four team in 2019 to topping our World Cup qualifying group, he has more than delivered on the remit to take Scotland back to a major tournament.

“We thank Steve for his record-breaking contribution and know that when the disappointment of World Cup elimination subsides, the Scotland supporters will be thankful for the memories of marching with pride at major tournaments once again.

“Finally, on behalf of the board of the Scottish FA I would like to make special mention to our incredible supporters.

“The many thousands who have travelled to the United States to celebrate the return to a World Cup - making a significant financial commitment to do so - have once again shown themselves to be exceptional ambassadors for our country and our national game.”
