Scott McTominay's Napoli future addressed as Serie A side tipped for splurge to help another ex-Man Utd man
Midfielder has been subject of transfer speculation this year
Securing Scott McTominay’s long-term future has been described as “crucial” for Napoli as the two parties continue talks over a new contract.
Scotland internationalist McTominay moved to Napoli two years ago from Manchester United and has become a talisman for the club, winning the Serie A title in his first season in southern Italy alongside fellow Scot Billy Gilmour. However, his long-term future has come under question, with his deal in Naples expiring in June 2028.
Napoli failed to retain the Scudetto last season and are under new management in Max Allegri. They have endured a stuttering start to the 2026/27 campaign and have recently been without McTominay, who underwent a small procedure last month to cure a minor heart issue.

Mc Tominay subsequently missed Scotland’s current Nations League campaign, which concludes on Tuesday night against Slovenia at Hampden, but could return for his club later this month. And prominent Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio believes Napoli are making progress in tying down the 29-year-old on a fresh deal.
"Securing McTominay's long-term future with a new contract is also crucial; the club is already working on an agreement, and I expect it will get sorted out,” explained Di Marzio. “The two sides aren't that far apart.”
Di Marzio has tipped Napoli to go on a spending splurge in January to address some of the deficiencies in the squad - namely in attack, where former Man Utd striker Rasmus Hojlund is their main No 9.
“Napoli definitely need strengthening,” continued Di Marzio. “They didn't really bolster the squad over the summer, partly because they had a lot of players returning from loan, and partly due to financial constraints and internal limitations that restricted what they could spend. In fact, their window was limited to low-cost deals for Favasuli and Badiashile."
Di Mazio continued in an interview with bet365: “I expect Napoli to dip into the market as early as January, because pretty much every area of the pitch needs freshening up. Some players are reaching the end of their cycle, and they need new blood in defence, midfield, and up front – where Rasmus Højlund can't carry the load all by himself.”
