Scott McTominay set to lose champion status after firing blank as Scotland World Cup star suffers injury

Napoli held by Como - now Inter can land the title

Napoli will be dethroned as Italian champions on Sunday if Internazionale avoid defeat against Parma after Scott McTominay and Co drew 0-0 at Como.

After a thrilling Serie title triumph last season that was inspired by Scotland internationalist McTominay, it has been a more challenging campaign for Napoli this time around.

Antonio Conte’s side have been unable to keep pace with Inter since the turn of the year - and now the Milan outfit can clinch the 2025/26 Scudetto on Sunday evening should they win or draw against Parma at the San Siro.

Sitting in second place, Napoli needed to win at Champions League-chasing Como to ask the question of Christian Chivu’s side, but after a stalemate at Stadio Guiseppe Sinigaglia, Inter can now afford to draw against Parma given they are nine points clear at the summit.

McTominay played the full match for Napoli and came closest, along with teammate Matteo Politano, to breaking the deadlock against Como. In the end the points were shared in a result that benefitted neither team.

Another Scotland internationalist in Billy Gilmour was an unused substitute for Napoli, while playmaker Kevin de Bruyne was taken off at the interval. It was a quiet evening for Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund, who led the line for Gli Azzurri.

Napoli are three points clear of third-placed AC Milan, who are away to Sassuolo on Sunday. Juventus are a further three points behind in fourth place. Barring a spectacular collapse in form, Napoli will qualify for next season’s Champions League.

They have three Serie A matches remaining - Bologna at home, Pisa away and then Udinese at home.

Elsewhere, Scotland striker Che Adams missed out for Torino on Saturday due to injury at I Toro went down 2-0 away at Udinese.

Adams, who is likely to be one of Scotland’s principal strikers at this summer’s, was reported to be suffering from a hamstring strain and did not make the trip to Stadio Friuli.

His Scotland teammate Lennon Miller, however, started for Udinese and provided an assist for Thomas Kristensen’s goal on 51 minutes. It was the 19-year-old former Motherwell midfielder’s first start for the club since mid-February.
