Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour hit with Napoli bombshell as Scotland duo set for major change

Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour are set for major change at Napoli with head coach Antonio Conte to stand down at the end of the season.

Conte signed the Scotland internationals in the 2024 summer transfer window and both have gone on to enjoy great success under the Italian tactician, winning the Serie A title in their first season and are on course to secure a runners-up finish this term.

McTominay in particular has flourished under Conte, becoming the hero of Naples for his goal contributions and powerhouse displays across his two years in Italian football since making the £28million move from Manchester United.

Gilmour has not had as big an impact as his Scotland team-mate but has still been a key figure for Napoli since joining from Brighton for £11m with a mixture of starts and substitute appearances.

Both players have been named in Steve Clarke’s 26-man Scotland squad for this summer’s World Cup and will hope to make history by helping the country go beyond the group stages of a major finals for the first time in history.

But they will be faced with a summer of uncertainty at club level as Napoli begin the search for a new manager with Conte preparing to say his farewells after the final game of the season against Udinese at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday.

Reports in Italy state that Conte will walk away from the club after striking a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with Partenopei President Aurelio De Laurentiis, which means that he will not receive any severance pay, despite the fact that the coach still has a year remaining on his contract.

Conte is rumoured to be in contention for a return to the Italian national team job, which is currently vacant following Rino Gattuso's swift departure on the back of failing to qualify for the World Cup. Conte previously served in the role between 2014 and 2016.

Massimiliano Allegri has emerged as an early frontrunner to replace Conte at Napoli with reports indicating he is the preferred candidate if he leaves AC Milan. A potential return has also been mooted for Maurizio Sarri, who could leave Lazio this summer, having previously managed Napoli from 2015 to 2018.
