Who will progress to the delayed Euro 2020 Championships next summer, and play some of their group stage games at Hampden, will be decided on the night in what is sure to be 90, or 120, nerve-jangling minutes.
It’s not the first qualification cliffhanger the national side has been involved in, and there’s a varied history when it comes to the matches that matter.
There have been play-off wins, play-off defeats and late drama aplenty be they successful qualification campaigns or otherwise.
There’s even, as recently as last month, been a penalty shoot-out too.
With it all on the line on Thursday night in Serbia, we looked back on nine all-or-nothing Scotland cliffhangers over the years – which way will Steve Clarke’s make-or-break night in Belgrade go?

5. won 1-0 vs Czechoslovakia, 1973
Substitute Joe Jordan's header gave Scotland an unassailable lead in the World Cup qualification group, sending Willie Ormond's team to West Germany and rendering the return in Bratislava a dead rubber the next month Photo: SNS Group

6. lost 6-1 agg vs Holland, 2003
Scotland's last Euro play-off started well with a 1-0 win over the Netherlands thanks to James McFadden's goal. But Holland made them pay in Amsterdam with a humbling defeat. Photo: SNS Group Jeff Holmes

7. drew 1-1 vs Norway, 1989
Scotland needed a point against Norway after losing to rivals France 3-0 a month earlier. Ally McCoist's goal looked like securing the place at Italia 90 but a late equaliser made it a VERY nervous wait for the point required. Photo: SNS Group

8. lost 2-1 agg vs England, 1999
Not so much a cliffhanger, but the Don Hutchison goal pulled back the aggregate score in the Euro 2000 play-off at Wembley to give hope but eventually it just didn't fall for Christian Dailly's close range header late on Photo: Shaun Botterill/Allsport
