Scotland World Cup blow as forward 'ruled out of finals' with injury

Conway requires surgery on ankle injury

Scotland forward Tommy Conway has been ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle injury.

The Middlesbrough striker, who can also operate as a winger, limped off during the second leg of his club’s EFL Championship play-off defeat by Southampton with an ankle issue and according to reports from Sky Sports, the 22-year-old has been told that he needs surgery.

It is a huge blow for Conway, who has been capped six times by Scotland and was in the squad for the European Championships in 2024. A regular for Middlesbrough this season under head coach Kim Hellberg, he scored 13 goals in 48 appearances and was expected to be part of the Scotland squad this summer.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke is due to name a 26-man squad for the World Cup and warm-up friendlies against Curacao and Bolivia on Tuesday. Conway has been part of the set-up for the past two years and his versatility in the forward line would have given him a strong chance of being selected.

Scotland’s other options in attack include Che Adams, Lyndon Dykes, Lawrence Shankland, George Hirst and Kieron Bowie. There is also a growing clamour for Ross Stewart and Oli McBurnie to be selected after good form with Southampton and Hull City respectively.

That strike pair will come up against each other next weekend with Saints face the Tigers in the Championship play-off final.

Scotland’s World Cup campaign begins on Saturday, June 13 when they face Haiti. Their other Group C opponents in the USA are Morocco and Brazil.
