Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has confirmed his squad numbers for the upcoming World Cup this month, dropping a huge hint over who he plans to use as his first-choice goalkeeper at the tournament.
Having qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1998 via a memorable 4-2 win over Denmark back in November, anticipation for the competition in North America is high, with Scotland’s Group C opener against Haiti just over a week away.
The national team waved goodbye to their fans last weekend with a thumping 4-1 international friendly win over 10-man Curacao at Hampden Park on Saturday, before jetting off to their training camp in the United States, with one final clash against Bolivia scheduled for June 6 in New Jersey before their campaign officially gets under way on June 13.
Head coach Clarke still has several decisions to make over his starting line-up, with Rangers’ Lawrence Shankland, Torino’s Che Adams, Charlton Athletic’s Lyndon Dykes and Southampton’s Ross Stewart all vying for the strikers roles, while Dinamo Zagreb’s Scott McKenna, Al-Etttifaq’s Jack Hendry, Rangers’ John Souttar, Wrexham’s Dom Hyam and Hibs’ Grant Hanley are competing for the centre-back slots.
Based on the squad number release, it appears Brentford’s Aaron Hickey has the edge over Everton’s Nathan Patterson and Celtic’s Anthony Ralston for the right-back role, while debate over whether Nottingham Forest’s Angus Gunn and Hearts veteran Craig Gordon should start in the net appears to have been decided.
