Scotland Under-21s' win marred by potential serious injury in no repeat of 12-0 triumph

Celtic right-back taken off early in second half

Scotland Under-21s prevailed 2-0 in their European Championships qualifier away at Gibraltar - but the match was marred by a potentially serious injury to Celtic right-back Colby Donovan.

The young Scots were victorious at the Europa Point Stadium thanks to a 19th-minute strike from James Wilson and a Taylor Steven effort seven minutes from the end as Scot Gemmill’s side moved on to seven points and into third place in Group B.

However, there will be major concern surrounding the status of Donovan, who was replaced by Dylan Lobban on 52 minutes after going down injured following a challenge from a Gibraltar opponent.

Donovan was attended to by medics and then taken off on a stretcher.

The news will come as a serious blow to Celtic’s coaching staff, with the Scottish champions already contending with injury issues in defence. First-choice right-back Alistair Johnston is set to spend months on the sidelines after hamstring surgery, while key centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers will also miss most of the season due to an operation on his Achilles.

Donovan is now set to miss Scotland Under-21s’ next match at home to Bulgaria at Fir Park in Motherwell - a match Scotland will need to win to have any reasonable chance of challenging Portugal and Czech Republic, the top two teams in the standings.

The 19-year-old will likely be assessed by Celtic doctors ahead of their return to action away at St Mirren next weekend.

Scotland defeated Gibraltar 12-0 last month, but this match was a much tighter affair, with the game in the balance before Steven settled matters for the visitors.
