Scotland star misses training on eve of Morocco World Cup clash

Defender sits out training again in fresh setback

Scotland defender Scott McKenna appears to have suffered a fresh setback in his bid to feature in the World Cup clash against Morocco on Friday.

McKenna missed the 1-0 win over Haiti in Boston on Sunday with a calf injury which also forced him to sit out the final World Cup warm-up match against Bolivia in New Jersey the previous week.

The 29-year-old Dinamo Zagreb centre-back appeared to have shaken off the issue when he returned to Scotland training at the Atrium Health Performance Park, home to Major League Soccer’s Charlotte FC, on Tuesday.

However, he was back on the sidelines 24 hours later as he sat out Scotland’s last Charlotte session on Wednesday before the squad’s afternoon flight to Boston, where the Morocco clash will take place.

Scotland, looking to qualify to the knockout stages for the first time, are top of pool with three points, after Morocco and Brazil drew 1-1 in their opener in New Jersey.

After taking on Morocco, Scotland – competing at the World Cup for the first time since 1998 – face a final group fixture against the Brazilians on June 24.
