Scotland lost 3-2 to Greece in their World Cup qualifier in Piraeus - yet can still reach the finals automatically after Denmark drew 2-2 at home to Belarus.
In a crazy, rollercoaster night of international football, Scotland now know that a win against the Danes at Hampden on Tuesday night will be enough to see them over the line.
Steve Clarke’s men so nearly battled back from three goals down against the Greeks, who roared ahead via goals from Anastasios Bakasetas, Konstantinos Karetsas and Christos Tzolis.
Scotland staged a fightback, with Ben Gannon-Doak and Ryan Christie finding the net - and a great save denying Scott McTominay what would have been an equaliser.
Nevertheless, thanks to Belarus’ fine result in Copenhagen, Scotland are just a point behind Denmark and should they beat them on Tuesday evening at Hampden, they will avoid the play-offs and reach the World Cup next year for the first time since 1998.

1. Craig Gordon
More than justified his selection despite having not played a minute of senior football with Hearts this season. A string of excellent first-half saves to keep the Greeks down to one goal in the first half. Will be a tad disappointed he battled a howitzer from Tzolis into the top corner of the net. 2. Aaron Hickey
Given a torrid time defensively by Tzolis, who capped off his night with a sumptuous finish to put the Greeks 3-0 up. Did try to support Gannon-Doak down the right flank but to limited effect. Was replaced by Ralston on 75 minutes as the Brentford man continues to get close to full fitness. 5 | Getty Images

3. John Souttar
Lost his bearings and was outmuscled by Pavlidis in the build-up to the opening Greek goal. Like many of his fellow defenders, struggled to deal with hosts. Marginally improved as the night went on. Booked late on for an elbow. 5 | Getty Images

4. Grant Hanley
The Hibs defender, winning his 65th cap, has been a stalwart during this campaign for Scotland. However, this was a rough night for the centre-half. Broke the defensive line too early for the opening Greek goal and was skinned by substitute Tetteh for the second. Replaced by McKenna towards the end of the match. Not a night that he will want to recall fondly. 3 | Getty Images
