Scotland man’s winless run extended in 11-minute collapse as international teammate bags comedy own goal

Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn fell to damaging late defeat in the MLS at the weekend.

Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn’s winless run at San Jose Earthquakes continued as three late goals saw them fall to a damaging 3-0 defeat against MLS Western Conference title rivals FC Dallas at the Toyota Stadium in Texas on Saturday night.

Despite being winless in their last four league games, San Jose’s title charge was still alive, as they went into the game in fourth place, just three points behind second-placed FC Dallas with four regular season games remaining. The visitors looked like a good value for an impressive point on the road too, keeping the scores level for most of the clash.

Gunn was booked in the 64th minute for dissent after arguing with the officials during a period when he was forced into numerous saves as pressure mounted on the San Jose defence. However, that resilience was finally broken late in the game when Petar Musa curled home a superb opener in the 83rd minute from just outside the area, and things spiralled for the Earthquakes from there on in.

Just five minutes later, Kaick Ferreira was brought down in the area by Daniel Munie, allowing Musa to score a quickfire second from the spot. Substitute Santiago Moreno then sealed the win with a fine individual effort in the 94th minute to add further gloss to the scoreline.

The result means that San Jose are now seven points adrift of MLS Western Conference league leaders Vancouver Whitecaps in fourth place. However, the Quakes still have a major chance of success this season with a spot in the Audi 2026 MLS Cup playoffs virtually secured. San Jose will now head into their final three games with a focus on maintaining their seeding, as they look to secure home-field advantage for the Round One best-of-three series.

Meanwhile, Gunn’s international teammate Nathan Patterson made his first appearance in over a month for Italian side Torino, but scored a bizarre own goal as they edged past relegation-threatened Monza and moved into the top half of the table with a 3-2 win at the Stadio Olimpico Grande on Friday night.

Signing for the Granata in the summer on a season-long loan from Everton, the 24-year-old has struggled for regular game time in Serie A, but appeared off the bench for the last 19 minutes of the clash as the home side looked to hold out for a narrow win. A goal from Kian Fitz-Jim had opened the scoring just before the break, but Gustavo Varela equalised almost instantly after the restart.

Rafik Belghali restored Torino’s lead on 61 minutes, and Nikola Vlasic looked to have put the result beyond doubt shortly afterwards. However, an own goal from Patterson sparked a late scare for the hosts, with the ex-Rangers man turning Cyril Ngonge’s low cross into his own net under no pressure in the fourth minute of injury time. However, Torino held their ground to take all three points and move into eighth place in the Serie A table.
