Scotland discover Nations League seeding and potential opponents as draw date confirmed

Scots were relegated to Nations League B last time out

Scotland have been confirmed as a Pot 1 team for next month’s Nations League B draw.

European football’s governing body UEFA have confirmed the procedure and pots for the next edition of the Nations League, which is due to commence after this summer’s World Cup.

Scotland were relegated from Nations League A last time out after losing a play-off to Greece and as a result are the top ranked team (17) in Nations League B. They will therefore sit in Pot 1 alongside Hungary, Poland and Israel.

Scotland will be put in a group with three other teams - one from Pot 2, one from Pot 3 and another from Pot 4. They will face each nation home and away across two elongated international windows.

Pot 2 contains Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Austria and Ukraine. Slovenia, Georgia, Republic of Ireland and Romania are in Pot 3, while in Pot 4, there are Sweden, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland and Kosovo.

The draw is slated for Thursday, February 12, with the ceremony starting from 5pm GMT.

It will be the first time that international matches will be played across FIFA’s new calendar. A ‘quadruple international match window’ will be held between September 24 and October 6, in which four Scotland matches will be played. The final group games will take place between November 12-17.

The knock-out stages of the Nations League will be played in the first half of 2027.

Scotland faced Portugal, Croatia and Poland in their previous Nations League group. Steve Clarke’s side finished third and lost a two-legged relegation play-off with Greece.

Scotland have this summer’s World Cup to look forward to before the Nations League begins. They are in Group C and face Haiti (June 13) and Morocco (June 19), both in Boston, before heading to Miami to take on Brazil (June 24).

Earlier this week, the Scottish Football Association confirmed that Scotland will play two warm-up matches at Hampden against Japan (March 28) and Curacao (May 30). Another two friendlies are expected to be confirmed in due course.
