Scotland captain Caroline Weir leaves Real Madrid to make 'no-brainer' move

Midfielder Weir arrives in France having made 125 appearances for Madrid and established herself as the club’s leading scorer with 63 goals.

Lyon are one of the major clubs in European football and won the French title last season, as well as finishing runners-up in the Champions League.

A statement on Lyon’s official website read: “OL Lyon is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Caroline Weir for the next three seasons. The Scottish national team captain is now tied to the club until June 30, 2029.

“The club is delighted with this new signing, who will bolster Lyon’s midfield with her clinical finishing and top-level experience.”

Weir, 30, joined Real Madrid in 2022 after spending four successful years with Manchester City. She also spent time with Liverpool, Bristol City and Arsenal after starting her career with Hibernian.

Weir was named Scotland captain earlier this year after the retirement of Rachel Corsie and under new head coach Melissa Andreatta, Scotland won their World Cup qualification group to advanced to the play-offs. Weir netted four goals in their recent win over Israel.

In total, Weir has been capped 121 times for Scotland and has scored 31 times.

"I was super excited to hear that Lyon were interested," Weir told Lyon’s club website. "For me, it's the club with the most history in the women's game.

"To be part of this project, the ambition of the club was in line with what I want to achieve, so I guess it was a no-brainer in many ways to commit to this club."
