Ex-Scotland target makes milestone appearance as Celtic man plays starring role in record breaking moment

Scotland had hoped to lure the 22-year-old goalkeeper away from the United States last year.

Former Scotland goalkeeping target Chris Brady capped his first international start for the United States with a strong performance in their record-breaking 4-2 friendly win over Chile in St Louis on Wednesday.

Brady, 22, held discussions with former Scotland head coach Steve Clarke last year about representing the national team after the Scottish Football Association learned of his eligibility, with reports in America claiming they formally contacted the Chicago Fire stopper.

However, talks appeared to have been halted when Brady was named in Mauricio Pochettino’s United States squad for the first time in June 2025, and he was later included in their squad for the World Cup this summer. Making his first start for the USMNT on Wednesday night, Brady made a strong impression with two excellent saves in his 45 minutes on the field, but two of his teenage teammates stole the headlines as they broke national team records.

Opening the scoring on 37 minutes through Middlesbrough midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, the hosts were pegged back on the stroke of half-time when Diego Ulloa levelled for Chile by poking home from close range after Darío Osorio’s corner caused a goalmouth scramble.

Chile took the lead shortly after the restart via a stunning long-range drive from Maximiliano Gutiérrez (49), only for teenage striker Julian Hall to level the scores a little over 60 seconds later. The 18-year-old’s strike was record-breaking, having also scored in the previous match against Peru; the teenager is now the youngest player ever to score in each of his first two international appearances.

Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards then put the home side back into the lead when he bulleted home Berhalter’s corner in the 72nd minute. The win was sealed in the closing stages with help from Celtic defender Auston Trusty.

Introduced in the 67th minute as a substitute for Neil Pierre, Trusty picked up an assist for Borussia Dortmund forward Mathis Albert, nodding down across the face of goal to help the teenager score deep into second-half stoppage time, becoming the United States’ youngest ever goalscorer at 17 years and 131 days old in the process.

His goal broke the previous record set a decade earlier by former Dortmund playmaker Christian Pulisic, who was 17 years and 253 days old when he scored against Bolivia in 2016.

There was still time for more drama, though, with Trusty and his teammates involved in a scuffle in the dying embers of the clash after Chile’s Leando Hernandez tried to kick the ball out of United States substitute goalkeeper Brian Schwake's hand. A skirmish broke out, with Richards and Hernandez booked for their respective sides.

Following the game, head coach Pochettino praised goalkeeper Brady’s performance on his first start saying: “For us, 45 minutes with each goalkeeper was a very good thing to see how they perform and how they behave. The keeper, like Chris, like Diego [Kochen], like Brian, they need to feel that they can cope with the pressure of playing. It's much better in that way to play 45 minutes and start to now make a debut.”
