Scotland suffered. England were left heartbroken - and Rodri’s tears turned to cheers at Euro 2024 as Spain succeeded in winning a record fourth Euros.
Gareth Southgate’s men were beaten finalists once again as they fell at the final hurdle, losing 2-1 to a supremely talented Spain side in the German capital of Berlin and that was that for another European Championship.
It was a strange tournament that saw defensive excellence often rewarded over attacking flair and individual brilliance, though few can argue that Spain were the deserved champions, lifting their first major trophy in 12 years. However, with defences on top throughout the tournament, which defender performed the best at Euro 2024? Who put on a defensive masterclass - and who has didn’t cover themselves in glory?
With the tournament now at an end, we look at which 10 defenders performed the best for their nations at the European Championship - as per FotMob player ratings.

5. Joao Cancelo - Portugal
Another player who enjoyed a positive tournament for Portugal was former Manchester City left-back Cancelo. He picked up an average rating of 7.50 thanks to his 196 successful passes, four chances created and 11 touches in the opposition box. | AFP via Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

6. Jules Kounde - France
While France were disappointing offensively, they conceded just one goal prior to their semi final defeat to Spain. This was by and large down to the performance of Kounde. Linked to several to EPL clubs, he picked up an average rating of 7.45 with 60.4% of his duals won, 18 recoveries and 11 chances created from centre-back. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

7. Strahinja Pavlovic - Serbia
One of the first teams eliminated from the tournament, it may be a surprise to see Pavlovic in this list. However, his 7.44 average rating is deserved after he won 70.3% of his duals, won six tackles and made four interceptions. | AFP via Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

8. Theo Hernandez - France
Like Kounde, the AC Milan full-back was a big reason for his nation's strong defensive record at the tournament. He picked up a 7.41 average rating thanks to his 91.9% passing accuracy, six chances created and 67.4% dual success rate. | Dan Mullan Photo: Dan Mullan
