Andy Robertson given emotional Liverpool send-off with giant Anfield tifo as next club 'confirmed'

Scotland captain set for new chapter after final appearance at Anfield

Andy Robertson was given an emotional send-off as the Scotland captain brought down the curtain on his Liverpool career in the 1-1 draw with Brentford at Anfield on Sunday.

The 32-year-old was honoured with a giant tifo covering the entire lower Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand as the teams emerged for kick-off which read "Robbo 26" and was then given a standing ovation from the home fans when he was substituted for Milos Kerkez in the 83rd minute.

The left-back was also given a guard of honour by his team-mates as he returned to the pitch following the full-time whistle, along with Mo Salah, who was also playing his final game for the club before the pair were serenaded with a rendition of ’You’ll Never Walk Alone’ by the crowd.

Robertson announced last month that he would be leaving Liverpool when his contract expires at the end of the season after nine trophy-laden years with the Merseyside club.

The left-back is now expected to complete a move to Tottenham Hotspur amid reports that a verbal agreement was reached with the North Londoners providing they avoided relegation.

Spurs secured their Premier League safety on the final day with a 1-0 home win over Everton with Robertson now set to complete a free transfer to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"Emotionally drained," was how Robertson described how he felt after a final appearance for the Reds ahead of joining up with the Scotland squad for the start of World Cup preparations next week. "Busy week and difficult because we have to focus on this game but also important by saying goodbye.

“In years to come then we know we are always welcome back to this football club. This is a big chapter of our book but it’s not the end. We’ve still got a lot of things to try and achieve. We have to focus on that. First and foremost we have to switch off for a week and then focus on the World Cup. But I know this is my family and I’ll always be welcome back here.”

Curtis Jones put the hosts in front before Kevin Schade’s diving header earned a point for Brentford, who narrowly missed out on a first ever European qualification. The result secured Champions League football for Liverpool next season, much to the relief of Robertson.

"It was a must," he added. "Hugely disappointing season. It was very important for us. We kinda limped over the line. It was important for me and Mo to leave the club in the Champions League."

Salah, who was given his own ovation from the fans when replaced in the 74th, also paid tribute to the departing Robertson. “I cried a lot. More than my whole life,” he said. “Very tough to leave a place like this. I’m really honoured to share the dressing room with Andy. He was there for the team. I’m very blessed to share the dressing room with him.”

Robertson also paid tribute to the departing Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, adding: “He pushed us to completely new limits and we should have won more Premier Leagues if it wasn’t for that man. What a servant to Manchester City and I wish him all the best.”
