Hibs left with mixed emotions after Dundee thriller as David Gray admits: 'I have to be careful'

Hibs concede in stoppage time after recovering from 2-1 down to lead 3-2

Hibs boss David Gray admitted the dramatic 3-3 Premiership draw with Dundee at Dens Park felt like a defeat.

And no wonder, given the Leith side were leading 3-2 in the fifth minute of stoppage time. That’s when home winger Cam Congreve produced a superb equaliser.

Dundee had earlier netted twice through Simon Murray and Luke Graham, with Owen Elding, Ante Suto and Jamie McGrath scoring for Hibs.

Gray lamented that his side had taken only a point despite hitting the back of the net three times.

“It’s real mixed emotions, to be honest, for me. I think it feels, because you lose a goal in the last second, like a defeat. I think that’s natural because it is the last kick of the game.”

Hibs went in front when Nicky Cadden hit a cross from the left and Elding sent a close-range header past Jon McCracken in the Dundee goal. However, Dundee equalised in the 15th minute when Graham found Murray inside the Hibs box and the striker turned Rocky Bushiri and hit a shot that deflected in off the defender.

The visitors upped the tempo in the second half, but Elding, Felix Passlack and McGrath all missed decent opportunities. Instead, it was Dundee who took the lead in the 72nd minute when Drey Wright delivered a superb cross and Graham fired high past goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger at the back post.

Hibs equalised in the 84th minute when Suto controlled a ball from fellow sub Martin Boyle and slotted a shot under McCracken, and then McGrath scored Hibs’ third just five minutes later, skipping past a couple of defenders before blasting a low shot past McCracken.

However, in the fifth minute of added time, Congreve ensured the game would end in a draw when his superb half-volley from the edge of the Hibs box flew past Sallinger.

“Take nothing away from the strike that got Dundee the point. I thought it was a fantastic hit. I was right behind it.  I knew as soon as he hit it, it was going in,” added Gray.

“But I think the story of the day for us is the fact we’ve come to a really difficult place and we’ve had to score three goals to get a point because that’s where we’ve let ourselves down, the defensive side of it.

“Unfortunately, the feeling we’ve got right now is that we’ve been in this position before and it’s something we’ll address, we’ll look at it.

“I have to be careful as the players are very low because of the manner of losing that goal in the last minute. But there is accountability across the board to make sure we learn from the experience and try to get better from it.”

Dundee boss Steven Pressley could not be prouder of his players after they battled to the end.

“I thought for 80 minutes we were terrific. Losing the two goals, I think it’s easy for a team to go under, but we responded again in amazing fashion,” he said. “It said a lot about the group and the spirit that after that setback we managed to salvage a point so I couldn’t be prouder.”
