Hibs land 'talented' midfielder on loan from EPL giants as striker also joins but not immediately

19-year-old duo sign on at Easter Road

Hibs have clinched the season-loan signing of midfielder Jacob Devaney from Manchester United while also securing striker Colton Swan on a permanent transfer from Charleston Battery.

The deal for 19-year-old Devaney - who spent the second half of last season on loan at St Mirren - includes an option to make move to Easter Road permanent next summer. Swan, who is also 19, will remain in the United States with his current club for the remainder of the 2026 USL Championship season before joining up with David Gray’s side in December.

Hibs beat competition from several suitors to land Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Devaney, who has been involved with the Manchester United senior squad during pre-season, coming off the bench to score in a 5-0 victory over Rosenborg last month.

“We’re really pleased to bring Jacob to the club,” said Hibs head coach Gray. “He already has experience of Scottish football and knows the demands of the Premiership, which will be important as he settles into the squad.

"He’s a technically talented young international footballer who is keen to learn and develop, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the group. To have him join before the end of the window is really positive, and we’ll look to get him settled in as quickly as possible.”

Devaney has been with the Manchester United academy since the age of six. He was named the club's Youth Scholar of the Year in 2025, following impressive performances for the U18s and captaining the Under-21 side at the age of 18.

Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay added: “We’re delighted to welcome a player of Jacob’s calibre to Hibernian FC.

“He’s a young player with an excellent background and, importantly, he already has experience of playing in the Scottish Premiership.

“A lot of clubs were understandably interested in Jacob, so we’re delighted that he saw his future at Hibs. I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts in getting this deal over the line.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for Jacob and for the club, and we’re really looking forward to seeing what he can bring to Hibs.”

Swan is ‘one for the future’

USA Under-20 international Swan enjoyed a breakout campaign in the USL this year, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists for Charleston. The 6ft 2in forward came through the Colorado Rapids academy, where he won the Under-16 MLS Cup Golden Boot.

“We’re really pleased to have agreed a deal for Colton,” Gray said. “He’s a talented young striker who is certainly one for the future, and we feel he has attributes that will suit Scottish football.

“He’s quick, direct and works incredibly hard for the team - and he’s got a real hunger to develop and improve his game. He’ll finish the season with Charleston, and then we look forward to welcoming him to Easter Road later this year.”

Mackay added: “Colton is an exciting, hungry, young striker who has US youth international experience, and we feel he can be another great addition to our squad. Easter Road is the perfect environment for him to progress longer term, and we look forward to welcoming him to Edinburgh.”
