Loanee Cam Congreve gives defiant relegation battle message after Dundee derby defeat
Cameron Congreve sent a strong message to supporters after their defeat at Tannadice.
Dundee attacker Cameron Congreve defiantly stated that they “won't be close to the relegation battle” despite their derby defeat to United at the weekend.
The Swansea City loanee couldn’t prevent the Dark Blues losing 3-0 at Tannadice, a result which leaves them still just five points ahead of Kilmarnock in 11th place. They now have back-to-back home matches against St Mirren and Livingston and could secure their top flight safety before their trip to Rugby Park on May 12.
Congreve is aware that they still have plenty of work to do to reach that goal and knows it’s important that they respond in a positive manner after the disappointment of losing on Sunday. The Wales under 21 international said: “We understand the situation totally.
“We’ll get ourselves out of that” - Dundee attacker confident of pulling away from relegation rivals
“We’ve been putting in some really good performances and probably have not had the results we deserved at times. We know how much we've improved and that we're a good team.
“We’ve put in some really good performances this year against the top teams in the division and we'll make sure we perform at that level for the last four games. With the results on Saturday, if we'd won the derby, it probably would have been a bit more comfortable.
“But like I said, we'll react and put it right and we won't be close to the relegation battle. We'll get ourselves out of that.”
After a competitive first half, in which they had an equaliser chalked off following a VAR intervention, Dundee were comfortably swept aside by their city rivals. Will Ferry netted a double either side of half time and Ryan Strain headed in a third to make the final score 3-0 to the hosts.
“It's a really tough one,” added Congreve. “I think we probably started the game off decently, causing a few problems from balls in the box and then conceded quite a poor goal.
“The second half was just not good enough. I think we all know that and we're hurting as much as everyone else. But we've got a game in six days to put it right. We have to really perform in the last four games now.”
