Wilfried Nancy social media post sends Celtic fans into meltdown as cryptic message goes viral

Post on X from account linked to Celtic manager attracts over 3 million views

A cryptic social media post from an account linked to Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy has gone viral after causing a stir among supporters.

The Frenchman, who was appointed only two weeks ago after arriving from Columbus Crew in the MLS, is already under pressure after becoming the first Celtic boss in history to lose his first three matches in charge following defeats to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, Roma in the Europa League and St Mirren in the League Cup final.

Nancy has remained defiant in the face of such early adversity, insisting he has "nothing to prove to anybody" during his pre-match press conference ahead of his fourth game in charge against Dundee United in the Premiership on Wednesday.

Now, an account on X under the username @wilfriednancy, which was set up in Canada in 2011 and has been tagged by his previous clubs, has issued what appears to be a defiant message to his critics.

The post, which landed on Tuesday evening, 24 hours before the trip to Tannadice, contains the hashtag #NewProfilePicture and shows a Venn diagram of two overlapping circles captioned 'Things That Matter' and 'Things You Can Control', with an arrow pointing to the overlapping area alongside the message, 'What you Should Focus On'.

The image had been been viewed over 3.2 million times, re-posted over 1000 times and generated 550 replies before the account was locked on Wednesday.

While the authenticity of the unverified account appears genuine - the previous post on December 5 was a statement entitled ‘Thank you Columbus Crew’ - whether Nancy himself posted the image remains unclear. However, the oblique message has left Celtic fans unimpressed with the majority of replies ranging from disbelief to embarassment.

It follows claims from Nancy prior to the Europa League clash against Roma that he had “cut everything” in relation to his social media activity.

“When I had the opportunity to become a coach, I was assistant coach for seven years, so I worked with many coaches,” he stated. “So I always told myself that when you become a coach, cut everything. So this is what I did.

“On Twitter I cut everything, regarding my name, regarding the club, regarding what people can say, because they have the right to say something.

“This is part of the job, that’s why we study for that, and after that, I’m not here to comment on everything.

“We can go to the restaurant together and maybe you’re going to say that you like the food, and me I’m going to say I don’t like it.

“So at the end of the day, this is part of the job, and I control what I can control to be good with my players, with my club, with the people that I work with, and to maximise our chance to win games by having good performance.”
