Martin O'Neill addresses two named Celtic transfer targets as hint given over progress of deals

Celtic boss believes progress being made in transfer hunt

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill believes the club is making progress in their search for a new winger.

The Parkhead side have been linked with Hungarian Damir Redzic of Slovak club DAC Dunajská Streda and Frenchman Farès Ghedjemis, who plays for Frosinone in the second tier of Italian football.

Celtic are keen to strengthen their wide areas for the remainder of the season - especially after Thursday night's 4-2 win over Utrecht ensured qualification to the play-off phase of the Europa League. They have at least two more matches in their schedule and will find out on Friday whether they will face Ferencvaros or VfB Stuttgart.

By the time that tie comes around, O'Neill hopes to have more options at his disposal and hinted that deals are coming to a head.

The Northern Irishman was asked specifically about Redzic and Ghedjemis and he replied: "I've got to tell you, you wouldn't be a million miles away." Pressed if it would be one or the other, he answered: "It could be."

Redzic, 24, is also wanted by Austrian side RB Salzburg and Ghedjemis, 23, is reported to be worth in the region of £6 million.

O'Neill reiterated the need to bring in more players before the transfer window closes on Monday night. "We know that we need to supplement the squad," he said. "We need a wee bit of quality as well to help. Particularly with the extra games now.

"I'm sure it would be a delight for our opposition at a domestic level. But we'll go with it, you might as well. Just for us to qualify and get another European night at Celtic Park, I don't think it will do us any harm if we get the players in, which I'm hoping that we will do.

"We are definitely making progress. There's no question about that."

O'Neill labelled parts of Celtic's performance against Utrecht "terrific" and praised defender Auston Trusty for scoring the all-important fourth goal after the Dutch side eroded an early three-goal cushion.

"Performance, I thought, for most parts was really terrific," continued O'Neill. "After the first two minutes when we were forced to corner, I thought our pressing was terrific.

"And as a consequence, we got ourselves a couple of goals in front. And not that you're ever coasting in a game, but we were doing splendidly. And I thought we'd just maybe see it through to half-time.

"They get a goal back, it unnerves you a little bit. And then when they got the second goal, then of course you're just beginning to get a wee bit concerned because at that time I actually thought we were flagging a little bit.

"But Trusty comes up with a great header and naturally we deserved to win the game. Overall, I was delighted with the performance."
