Celtic transfer news: Two deals agreed, position wanted, £14m bid - what to expect on deadline day

Pressure on Celtic board to come up with the goods

There will be plenty of focus on Celtic's transfer deadline day activity as an under-fire board look to appease supporters by giving Martin O'Neill the signings he says he needs for the second half of the campaign.

O'Neill has been forthcoming about the need for new arrivals of sufficient quality to bolster his squad for both the Scottish Premiership title run-in and the bid to go deep into the Europa League knockout stages.

Frustrated fans have not been shy in airing their views on the club's performance in previous transfer windows and the current one with anti-board chants and protests now commonplace at matches.

The sacking of manager Wilfried Nancy and head of football operations Paul Tisdale on January 5 has undoubtedly had an impact with some of the recruitment plans put in place by the duo torn up following their departure.

Julien Araujo arrived on loan from Bournemouth during Nancy's short-lived reign and the Mexican right-back has proved a solid addition. A reputable striker has also been signed with Tomas Cvancara arriving on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach. A goal and an assist in his first two appearances represent a promising start in the Hoops for the Czech international.

However, the richest club in Scotland by some distance, with around £77million in the bank according to their most recent financial report, have yet to spend any money on transfer fees this January.

Last week it appeared Celtic had set their sights on French winger Fares Ghedjemis from Serie B side Frosinone with interest also shown Hungarian forward Damir Redzic of Dunajska Streda.

"You would not be a million miles away," was O'Neill's response when asked about both players after the 4-2 win over Utrecht in the Europa League on Thursday night. By the weekend it was apparent that neither player would be coming to Parkhead with Celtic unable to agree a fee with Frosinone for Ghedjemis while Redzic had reached an agreement with Austrian club RB Salzburg instead.

Celtic moved on to other targets with a £3million deal now agreed for Lorient winger Joel Muvka. The 23-year-old travelled to Glasgow on Monday night after undergoing a medical in London and hopes the move to Parkhead will help his aim of breaking into the Norway World Cup squad.

Another loan deal is also on the cards with striker Junior Adamu set to arrive from SC Freiburg. The 24-year-old Austrian international has also travelled to Glasgow with the move expected to be finalised on Monday, barring any last-minute hitches.

Celtic are also looking to bring in a centre-back before the 11pm deadline to compensate for Cameron Carter-Vickers being ruled out for the season with an Achilles injury. Stephen Welsh was recalled from his loan at Motherwell to provide cover during January and will only return to Fir Park if Celtic make a breakthrough with a centre-back target with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Aurèle Amenda among the

The focus will be very much on securing incomings - but outgoings cannot be ruled out with Celtic's resolve set to be tested by Nottingham Forest, who are interested in signing midfielder Arne Engels. The Premier League club had a £14million bid rejected on Sunday but could return with an improved offer on deadline day for a player who cost Celtic a club record £11m when arriving from Augsburg 18 months ago.

O'Neill is a keen admirer of Engels and made it clear he does not want him to depart. "I would want it rebuffed, unless it was £100million, then I think the board would step in there," the 73-year-old said after the 2-0 win over Falkirk on Sunday.

Japanese duo Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate have also been linked with moves away, but Celtic are unlikely to sanction an exit for either player until the summer.
