Celtic land five-figure UEFA fan - but they aren't only club to be hit by sanction

Stuttgart actions land club in hot water with UEFA

A tennis ball protest by some Celtic fans during last month’s Europa League match against VfB Stuttgart has led to a UEFA fine of nearly £13,000.

The first leg of the knockout round play-off at Celtic Park witnessed a false start as dozens of small orange and yellow balls were thrown on to the pitch in the opening seconds as disgruntled fans continued their protests against the board and the banning of the Green Brigade ultras group.

The move caused a three-minute delay to proceedings and was criticised by Celtic manager Martin O’Neill, saying it acted as a benefit to Stuttgart. The Bundesliga side went on to win the match 4-1 and while Celtic won the second leg 1-0 in Germany, the damage was done in Glasgow.

"Anybody who thinks that is a good idea needs their heads examined,” O’Neill said in his post-match press conference.

"First of all it sends out the totally wrong message to Stuttgart. The game is hard enough, and the problem is some years ago this was an incredibly intimidating place to come to. That sort if thing does not help at all.

“There has been battles going on, all sorts of things really, but that sort of thing doesn't help."

And now further ramifications of the event have emerged after UEFA’s list of disciplinary decisions taken by its Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body was released on Thursday. It showed that Celtic had been fined €15,000(£12,970) for the “throwing of objects”.

Stuttgart were also fined €22,500 (£19,450) after their supporters were deemed to have “transmitted a message that is not fit for a sports event” during the second leg at the MHPArena.
