85-goal former Celtic hero Kyogo linked with Parkhead return as club chiefs 'make contact' over shock transfer
The former Celtic striker has been linked with a sensational return to Parkhead
Celtic are aiming to beef up their striking options in the coming days - and Japanese striker Kyogo Furuhashi has emerged as a sensational option to return to Parkhead a year on from his exit, according to reports.
Currently playing for Birmingham City in the EFL Championship, Furuhashi has struggled at St. Andrew’s following his £5million summer move to the Midlands, failing to score a single league goal in his 23 appearances for the Blues.
The 30-year-old had spent three-and-a-half successful seasons at Parkhead after becoming one of former head coach Ange Postecoglou’s first signings, joining from Vissel Kobe for a fee of £4.5million in 2021. The Japanese international went on to score 85 goals in all competitions for the club, winning four Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish League Cups, and two Scottish Cups in the process.

He brought an end to his time at Celtic a year ago, though, when he signed for side Rennes as part of the deal that saw Jota make his own emotional return to the club last January. The French side was reported to have paid a fee of around £10million for the popular forward. His time in Ligue 1 was ill-fated, though, making just six appearances before departing the club last summer to join EFL Championship promotion hopefuls Birmingham - though he could now be set for a sensational return to Glasgow.
Head coach Martin O’Neill is desperate to add to his striking options in January and called on the club’s board to “supplement” his squad during the transfer window, insisting that Celtic must strengthen if they are to have any hope of retaining their Scottish Premiership crown. According to The Scottish Sun, the 73-year-old’s demands have led the Celtic hierarchy to approach Birmingham chiefs over the possibility of a shock return for the former fan favourite.
AFC Bournemouth right-back Julian Araujo agreed a loan deal until the end of the season to become Celtic’s first signing of the window last week, and the Scottish champions have also been strongly linked with a move for Hadjuk Split star Niko Sigur and Maccabi Netanya winger Jocelin Ta Bi in recent days as O’Neill looks to strengthen his options ahead of the second half of the campaign.
