Celtic, Rangers and Hibs land late deals as Scotland international departs Hearts - transfer deadline day

A round-up of transfer deadline day in the Scottish Premiership

Another hectic transfer deadline day has come to a close in the Scottish Premiership. Celtic, Hibs and Dundee were the busiest clubs with three signings each on the final day of the January window, with three players also departing Easter Road.

Rangers were the biggest spenders - splashing £4.75million on a new striker - while league leaders Hearts were one of only two clubs in the top flight not to sign anyone on deadline day having done their business earlier in the month.

Here is a round-up of all the transfer deadline day signings in the Scottish Premiership...

Dons raid Bundesliga as duo depart

Aberdeen signed 27-year-old midfielder Dennis Geiger on loan from Hoffenheim, with an option to buy. The former German youth international revealed Dons sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel was a key factor in the move.

“I am excited to be here," Geiger said. "I can’t wait to meet the people at the club and the fans and learn about the city. I know Lutz well from our time at Hoffenheim. He made it clear how much Aberdeen wanted to have me here, so the decision was easy for me.

“It’s the chance for a restart, a new beginning. I want to push myself out of my comfort zone and take on this new challenge. I like to be aggressive, but I believe in my technical ability. I’ve got a strong mentality. I want to win in everything I do."

“Dennis will bring real energy and tenacity to the squad”, said Pfannenstiel. “I’ve known him since his early years at Hoffenheim, so I know what type of character he is. He has played at the highest level so brings a real pedigree and attributes which I believe can help improve us.”

There were two deadline day departures from Pittordrie. Adil Aouchiche was recalled by Sunderland ahead of a move to Schalke. Another midfielder departed as Leighton Clarkson joined Blackpool for an undisclosed fee.

Celtic land trio, keep Engels and eye ex-England star

Celtic have been linked with a move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after a hectic transfer deadline day saw them sign three new players and reject a £25million bid for Arne Engels.

Former England midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain has been without a club since mutually terminating his contract with Besiktas in August but has been training with former club Arsenal to build his fitness in recent months.

As the 32-year-old is a free agent, there was no rush for Celtic or any other interested parties to complete a deal before Monday night's 11pm deadline with unattached players able to sign for clubs outwith the transfer windows.

Celtic stood firm in the face of multiple bids from Nottingham Forest for Belgium midfielder Engels. After having offers in the region of £14m and £17m rebuffed, Forest returned with a third bid for the 22-year-old. However, the Hoops turned down the opportunity to make a significant profit on a player they bought for £11m from Augsburg in August 2024.

After failing to replace main goalscorer Kyogo Furuhashi in the final week of last year’s winter transfer window, Celtic appear to be taking no chances amid what is gearing up to be the most competitive Premiership title race in decades.

Austria international forward Junior Adamu arrived on loan from Freiburg with Celtic having the option to buy the 24-year-old. Reports indicate Celtic will pay a £432,000 loan fee with a £4.3m sum to be paid if they choose to take up the permanent transfer.

Adamu has only netted three Bundesliga goals in two and a half seasons. He previously scored 23 goals in 84 appearances in his formative years with RB Salzburg and he believes his move to Scotland can help him add to his nine Austria caps ahead of the World Cup.

“I’m very excited to be here and I can’t wait to get started," he told Celtic TV. “I want to give my best for this club and try to win the title, also the cup, and Europa League, to score a lot of goals, and help the team. I can’t wait. I have a good feeling. I’ve spoken with the manager and he’s given me good motivation, and I trust him, he’s given me that trust. He’s told me how the system is and I feel the connection is really strong.”

Adamu’s arrival allowed Johnny Kenny to join Bolton on loan while Celtic also bid farewell to goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi who joined Leyton Orient on a permanent transfer.

A renegotiated deal for Lorient winger Joel Mvuka was also announced an hour beyond the transfer deadline after issues were raised during the 23-year-old's medical. The Norwegian was originally set to sign on a £3million permanent transfer, however, he has now joined the Parkhead club on a loan deal until the end of the season, with an option to buy.

The Hoops were also eager to add a defender and did so at the 11th hour with the arrival of 20-year-old centre-back Benjamin Arthur on loan from Brentford. The late deal paved the way for Stephen Welsh to return for a second spell at Motherwell after he was recalled from a season-long loan in mid-January.

Scotland international departs Hearts

James Wilson has completed a loan move from Hearts to Tottenham Hotspur which includes the option of a permanent transfer.

The two clubs agreed a deal for the 18-year-old Scotland internationalist. It sees Hearts receive an immediate six-figure loan payment followed by a transfer fee if Spurs decide to sign Wilson permanently at the end of the season.

The pre-agreed summer fee is understood to be £2.5 million before add-ons, with Hearts also entitled to a sell-on fee should Spurs transfer Wilson to another club in future. The Edinburgh club were in no rush to see one of their most promising youth academy graduates leave, but the striker is keen to play more often after dropping to the fringes of the Tynecastle first-team squad. He now gets the opportunity to impress English Premier League coaches.

He will initially join Tottenham’s Under-21 side and play in Premier League 2.

Hibs' deadline day flurry

Hibs head coach David Gray welcomed several new arrivals as the club utilised some of the record transfer fee received for Kieron Bowie. Hibs brought in attacking reinforcement in the shape of Croatian-Australian forward Ante Suto after Bowie departed for Hellas Verona. Gray also added German wing-back Felix Passlack from VfL Bochum, also for an undisclosed fee, and signed Zimbabwe international centre-back Mushane Garananga on loan from Danish champions FC Copenhagen.

Suto has delivered four goals and six assists for Slaven Belupo in the Croatian top flight this season and the 25-year-old joins until the summer of 2028, with Hibs holding an option for a further season.

Gray said: “Ante is another strong addition to our forward line and gives us a very direct threat in front of goal. He is a powerful player with a strong physical presence and he is a brilliant option to have because he is capable of playing out wide as well as through the middle.”

Passlack joins until June 2029. He made his Borussia Dortmund debut aged 17 and became the youngest German scorer in Champions League history when he scored against Legia Warsaw in 2016. The 27-year-old has made 97 Bundesliga appearances during spells with Dortmund, Hoffenheim and Bochum, as well as 10 Champions League games and experience abroad in loans with Norwich and Fortuna Sittard.

“Felix is a tenacious, attack-minded player that can play anywhere on the right-hand side,” Gray said. He comes with a great pedigree, having played at a very high level, and will be a strong addition to the squad.”

Garananga, 25, has collected 17 international caps, has won league and cup doubles in Moldova and Denmark, played in all three European competitions and joined Copenhagen from Mechelen in a £3.5million deal. His arrival was announced just as the window closed.

“He has got some fantastic attributes which will stand him in good stead for this league,” Gray said. “He is a quick, aggressive centre-back who is comfortable in possession and playing out from the back.”

A busy day at Easter Road continued with the exit of Dylan Levitt to Leyton Orient and Junior Hoilett to Swindon, plus a loan move for record signing Thibault Klidje, who has joined Danish side Randers for the rest of the season just five months after Hibs paid in excess of £1m to sign him from Luzern.

Rangers break record to get their man

Rangers boss Danny Rohl wanted a new striker on transfer deadline day to boost his Premiership title bid - and got his wish. The Ibrox club went beyond the 11pm deadline with a midnight signing announcement of Ryan Naderi from Hansa Rostock.

The £4.75million deal is the most expensive in the history of the German third division.

Naderi began his senior career with his hometown club Dresden before moving to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2021. After three seasons he switched to Hansa in 2024, where this campaign he has notched eight goals and five assists in 18 outings.

Rohl said: “I am delighted to add Ryan to the squad. He is still young in terms of his playing career, but he has shown in Germany that he knows the way to goal as well as contributing with a number of assists due to his high level of skill.

“He is someone who has a lot of potential and I believe we can help take his game to the next level. We will help him adapt to his new surroundings and I am looking forward to seeing what he can do in a Rangers shirt.”

Midfielder Joe Rothwell left Ibrox to sign for Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee while Clinton Nsiala joined Belgian side Westerlo on loan with an option for a permanent move.

Rest of the Premiership

Arsenal swooped to sign 18-year-old St Mirren forward Evan Mooney. The Buddies declared they had secured a “substantial fee with potential for significant future add-ons and a sizeable sell-on clause”. Saints brought in an 18-year-old from the Premier League as Manchester United Under-21 captain Jacob Devaney bolstered their midfield.

Falkirk announced the arrival of Aston Villa winger Ben Broggio on loan with the 19-year-old becoming their third new January recruit.

Kilmarnock were the first club to announce a deadline-day signing as midfielder Aaron Tshibola returned for a fourth spell at Rugby Park on a contract until the end of the season.

Dundee made three signings as Dutch defender Lewis Montsma joined on a short-term deal from Lincoln, former Aberdeen and Rangers winger Scott Wright joined on loan from Birmingham and 18-year-old forward Aldahir Valenzuela became the latest player to sign on loan from Mexican side Monterrey. Dundee also look to have rebuffed interest in Luke Graham.

Dundee United signed 21-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Agyei on a permanent transfer from Israeli Premier League side Ashdod.

There were no arrivals or departures from bottom club Livingston.
