Coastal erosion protection works under way at historic Scottish golf course
North Berwick West Links works will run for approximately 15 weeks
The North Berwick Golf Club has issued an update on its Coastal Erosion Protection Project at the West Links, with “encouraging progress” being made along the coastline adjacent to the 14th green.
The project is designed to protect vulnerable sections of the course and surrounding dune systems from the ongoing effects of coastal erosion.
The work, which forms a key part of the club’s long-term commitment to safeguarding the West Links for future generations, is being carried out in a phased manner.

It has started with the greenside at the 14th, will then focus on the 13th greenside before looking at the third tee.
Play will continue as normal throughout the project, with secure fencing installed around active working areas for safety and environmental protection.
“I am delighted that the construction phase of this key project, our number one priority, is now underway,” said Stuart Bayne, general manager of The North Berwick Golf Club.
‘Measures will provide robust protection’
“The works will run for approximately 15 weeks and involve the sensitive installation of largely hidden engineering structures, comprising rock-filled gabion baskets and mattresses using locally sourced stone. These measures will help to hold the line and provide robust protection for key areas of the course and the surrounding dune systems.
“Once installed, the defences will be sand-capped and planted with marram grasses, with important landscaping and biodiversity enhancements carefully considered and incorporated as part of the design.

“I would also like to thank East Lothian Council for their support and continued partnership as we work together to polish and protect the West Links, an essential asset and internationally recognised golf heritage site, for generations to come.”
This project follows a long and carefully-managed process that began after the significant storm events of 2023.
The club has also hired Gil Hanse, one of the top golf architects, to carry out work aimed at ”polishing and protecting” the West Links.
