Big Race to Dubai jump for Euan Walker after top-ten finish in China

Scot records best performance on DP World Tour as title falls to American ace

Euan Walker recorded his first top-ten finish on the DP World Tour as victory in the Hainan Open presented by MAEXTRO went to American Jordan Gumberg.

Lying three shots off the lead heading into the closing circuit at Mission Hills, Walker’s hopes of a maiden win were effectively killed off by an early double-bogey 6 on the Blackstone Course.

The Ayrshireman repaired that damage by picking up birdies at the third and sixth only to take another double bogey at the par-4 seventh.

He then found himself three over for the day after dropping a shot at the 13th before regrouping to stage a strong finish, picking up birdies at the 14th, 15th and 18th.

Signing off with a par 72 for a 14-under-par total, the 30-year-old finished joint-sixth to pick up a career-best cheque for around £75,000.

The encouraging effort came in Walker’s 24th appearance on the main tour and saw him jump 69 spots to sit 97th in the Race to Dubai.

Gumberg, a 30-year-old from Florida, closed with a 70 for a 19-under total, winning by a shot from Spaniard Jorge Campillo. It was his second tour success after landing a breakthrough triumph in the SDC Championship in South African just over two years ago.

In between his victories, he held on to his card at the end of last year after holing out for an eagle with his final shot of the season in the Genesis Korea Championship.

“It feels unbelievable, this is a dream-come-true week,” he admitted of now being a champion again and jumping more than 100 spots to sit 15th in the Race to Dubai.

"After the finish of last year, to be standing on the podium again and holding a trophy is unreal, it’s incredible.”

Daniel Young finished joint-34th on five under, followed by Calum Hill (four under), David Law (three under) and Grant Forrest (three over).
