Where Perthshire meets the Premier League: Chelsea FC to train Scots students

Glenalmond College announces a landmark partnership with Chelsea Football Club, one that redefines what Scottish education can offer the world's most ambitious young footballers.
Nestled in 300 acres of Perthshire countryside, Glenalmond has spent 180 years shaping some of Scotland's finest minds, combining academic rigour with the breadth of experience that only boarding school life can provide. Now, in a partnership that has no precedent in Scottish education, it has joined forces with Chelsea Football Club: current FIFA Club World Cup champions, two-time UEFA Champions League winners, and one of the most globally recognised names in world football.
The partnership is not a branding exercise. Running from September 2026 onwards, Glenalmond College will host a fully developed football programme, built collaboratively between the two organisations, that embeds Chelsea's coaching methodology directly into the fabric of life at Glenalmond's Perthshire campus. Pupils enrolled in the programme will train under Chelsea Football Club coaches alongside a full-time football coach embedded permanently within the College, with access to Chelsea's world-renowned Cobham Training Ground and Stamford Bridge, exposing young players to one of the most advanced performance environments in global sport.

What makes this genuinely different from anything seen before in Scottish independent education is the deliberate refusal to treat sport and academic life as competing priorities.
“Chelsea FC’s global reputation for development aligns naturally with Glenalmond’s tradition of nurturing talent, ambition and personal growth in every pupil. Partnering with Chelsea FC reflects Glenalmond’s commitment to delivering a world-class environment where academic ambition and sporting development go hand in hand,” says Phil Hughes, Head of Commercial Development, Partnerships and Alumni at Glenalmond College.
“This partnership has been built with genuine alignment around standards, values, and the experience being delivered to young people. It is the first of several significant global partnerships that will enhance the opportunities available to our pupils, both inside and beyond the classroom, while continuing to elevate the profile of Glenalmond College on an international stage.
The programme sits alongside Glenalmond's already exceptional sporting offering — a nationally recognised rugby programme, golf, hockey, tennis, cricket and shooting — integrating within the wider timetable rather than disrupting it. Pupils can pursue high-level football development without sacrificing the full benefits of boarding life: the friendships, the cultural breadth, the academic achievement that defines a Glenalmond education.
For Chelsea Football Club, the appeal is equally clear.
Throughout our discussions, there has been clear alignment around the importance of creating an environment where young people can pursue sporting ambition alongside academic excellence and personal development.
“Glenalmond College has demonstrated a strong commitment to delivering a high-quality and values-led programme, and we are excited to begin working together as this long-term partnership develops."

The announcement reflects a broader and accelerating transformation at Glenalmond under the ownership of 35 Education, operating under the patronage of His Excellency Dr Khalid bin Mohammad Al-Attiyah. Professor Basak Akdemir, Chairperson of Glenalmond College and Owner of 35 Education, frames the partnership in terms that speak to the school's central purpose.
“At its heart, this partnership is about opportunity. It is about ensuring that young people have access to exceptional experiences with globally recognised organisations across education, sport, and personal development, while remaining in an environment that nurtures ambition, integrity, and well-being.”
Glenalmond College has a proud heritage, but we are equally focused on the future. Partnering with one of the world's best football clubs demonstrates both our ambition and our belief in what young people can achieve when given the right support and opportunities!
