The holiday they'll talk about all year: making memories at Fairmont St Andrews this October

Autumn on the Fife coast is golden, bracing and completely underrated. Here's why it might just be the setting for your family's most-loved half-term yet.

Some holidays are the kind you endure. Flights, transfers, too much sun, too much cost, too many hours in a car park. And then there are the ones where the magician made everyone gasp, where the youngest decorated a cookie the shape of a witch, where Dad turned out to be unexpectedly good at axe throwing, and where the teenager came back from a skin talk at the spa looking quietly thrilled and pretending not to be.

That second kind of holiday is what Fairmont St Andrews has been putting together for October half term.

Set on a 520-acre clifftop estate on the Fife coast, looking out over the North Sea in the county that quietly claims to be the home of golf, the resort is offering up to 20% off stays this October. This offer is inclusive of a full Scottish breakfast each morning and access to the Fairmont Spa and Fitness facilities. The rate is available for a minimum of three nights.

Now, to the week itself. Because brilliant rates is only part of the story.

A programme built around moments

The genius of what Fairmont St Andrews has assembled for October is that it creates the conditions for memory without forcing them. Nothing is regimented. There is no clipboard, no roll call, no single path through the week. Instead, there's a rich and layered programme that gives every age group something to look forward to and lets the family choose its own adventure each morning.

Running all day, every day, the resort keeps the Craft Room open, runs a Bouncy Castle session, and invites families into the wildflower meadow to explore the Bug Hotel. A quietly wonderful, genuinely educational installation that small children find utterly absorbing and older ones find unexpectedly interesting. The pick of the all-day offerings, though, might be crazy nine-hole golf through the Atrium, complete with a family bar alongside it. Nine holes, all ages, all abilities, all competing with cheerful seriousness: this is the kind of family activity that generates the most chat at dinner.

Mornings are more active and adventurous. On select dates throughout the holidays, the resort offers candle making, the Brilliant Bees Talk (a deep dive into the resort's own on-estate hives, about which more later) with the beekeeper, cookie decorating, axe throwing and clay pigeon shooting. These are activities that cross the generational divide in exactly the right direction, pulling parents and teenagers into genuine, competitive participation. Book ahead; these fill up.

Afternoons are where the week takes on a more celebratory feel. Pizza making in La Cucina the resort's Italian restaurant transformed, on select dates is the kind of session that produces both a meal and a memory. Face painters and balloon artists appear across the week on set days, pitched perfectly for younger children. And from 17th through to 25th October, films run in the Auditorium, with the popcorn station doing exactly the work you'd expect.

On 17th October, the Witches & Wizards Workshop brings an extra layer of Halloween magic to the afternoon. Ideal for the week's younger adventurers, and a perfect segue into the Halloween-themed colouring sheets that run through the break.

A magician will also be performing on the 14th, 17th, 21st and 24th October. Four performances across the week. Close-up, clever, entirely baffling in the best possible way. This is the moment children talk about in the car on the way home, still trying to work out how it was done.

The week's unmissable dates

Friday 10th October: Alpaca afternoon. The team at Bowbridge Alpacas — a family-run farm between Peat Inn and Largoward in North-East Fife, about fifteen minutes from St Andrews bring their herd to the resort. Bowbridge offer some of Scotland's most celebrated alpaca experiences on their own farm, and having them on-site is a genuine coup. this is exactly the kind of afternoon that becomes embedded in family memory.

Sunday 18th October: October Family Brunch. This is the centrepiece of the half-term and the date to build your stay around. A long, generous, properly celebratory meal, the kind that turns into a two-hour occasion without anyone noticing. It is, by every account, exactly what a week away should feel like at its peak. Book your brunch experience here.

Thursday 24th October: Donkeys. The donkeys arrive on the 24th for one day only. Add the magician the same evening, and the 24th shapes up as one of the strongest days of the week.

For the bees and the bee curious

A paragraph that sounds niche and earns its place: the resort keeps its own working hives on the estate. Real hives, real bees, real honey. The kind that ends up in little jars at the breakfast table. The Brilliant Bees Talk takes families directly into this story, running on select mornings and it's one of those experiences that works across age groups. Younger children find the movement and the scale of the colony genuinely astonishing. Teenagers start asking questions about colony structure and honey production before they've had time to decide they're not interested. Go once, go twice if you can.

For golf families

The resort's Golf Pro sessions run Monday to Thursday throughout the holiday, from 12th to 22nd October. Structured lessons for beginners and improvers, in what is, let's be clear, one of the most extraordinary places in the world to first pick up a club. Factor in the putting competition and the crazy golf through the Atrium and the day-long foot golf on the grounds, and the week builds a full arc for anyone who wants to make golf part of the trip, without it consuming the trip for those who don't.

For teenagers: the programme that takes them seriously

The Fairmont St Andrews teen offer is properly thought through. Zephyr Sports Bar anchors the social side. Sports simulator, pool table, darts, and a mocktail list served in proper glasses. Foot golf, table tennis, golf lessons, the axe throwing and clay pigeon shooting on select mornings, the alpacas and the donkeys: there's enough variety that each day can look different.

But the genuinely stand-out addition to this year's teen programme is the Teen Skin Talks sessions led by the resort's expert spa team, designed specifically for young skincare enthusiasts: thoughtful, properly expert, and pitched exactly right for an age group that is increasingly engaged with skincare and wellness. It's the kind of add-on that makes a teenager feel genuinely considered.

For younger children

The younger ones are exceptionally well catered for. The playroom and craft room are available every day. Cookie decorating and pizza making on select dates give the week proper foodie highlight moments. Messy, fun, and extremely edible. The films in the Auditorium from the 17th, the face painters, the balloon animals, the bouncy castle, the Bug Hotel, the bee talks, the visit from the Bowbridge alpacas and the donkeys on the 24th: the week for small children is genuinely, properly full.

One additional detail worth noting: the resort has Hunter adult-sized wellies available to borrow. Which means no one has to pack the boots, the grounds are fully accessible in all weathers, and the wildflower meadow, the coastal path and the estate's 520 acres are genuinely open to everyone from the moment you arrive.

Pool time & pure relaxation

For those looking to unwind, make time to enjoy our luxurious pool and spa facilities during your stay. Pool sessions must be booked in advance to ensure a relaxed and comfortable experience for all guests.

Beyond the resort

For all the resort holds, it would be a shame not to step outside and Fairmont St Andrews has direct access to the Fife Coastal Path, which in October is golden-lit and near-empty. Walk the clifftop path towards St Andrews. The town itself is a lovely half-day: the ruined cathedral and castle, the cobbled streets, ice cream in defiance of the temperature, and West Sands beach stretching west, wide, wild, and magnificent with a wind behind it.

St Andrews Aquarium, perched on The Scores above the bay, opens daily at 10am with penguin feeds, meerkat encounters and shark talks through the day perfect for a wet morning.

Craigtoun Country Park, two miles from town, runs its seasonal attractions. The Rio Grande miniature railway, Puffin' Billy tractor rides, boating on the Dutch Village lake, crazy golf, go-karts, pedal cars and bouncy castles, daily through the October holidays before closing for the season. Entry is free; parking is free. It is one of Fife's most-loved family days out for good reason.
